🔥🔥🔥Exciting news! I just published a preprint on the #Ultrastructure of #PrecapillarySphincters and the #NeurovascularUnit. This study is based on the microns-explorer.org/ dataset by @AllenInstitute. Check 🧵 for more details, including movies of the findings. (1/15)

The Invisible Cities is a book everyone should read.

"No matter how fantastical those places are in Invisible Cities, he reveals that they’re all Venice. They’re all basically Marco Polo riffing about Venice. It’s his childhood home. Calvino touches on the idea of nostalgia, and I think in the ancient Greek sense of nostalgia—in trying to get home, you go off and you have these adventures"

"Personalized genome sequencing has revealed millions of genetic differences between individuals, but our understanding of their clinical relevance remains largely incomplete. To systematically decipher the effects of human genetic variants, we obtained whole genome sequencing data for 809 individuals from 233 primate species, and identified 4.3 million common protein-altering variants with orthologs in human."

"To capture the complex interplay between the tumor antigenic landscape and anti-tumor immunity in lung cancer, we integrated genomics, transcriptomics, immunopeptidomics, spatial transcriptomics and multiplexed immunofluorescence (mIF) imaging to investigate the antigenic landscape in tumors with variable degrees of immune infiltration"

'That sense of phew, though, Bansal said, feels tenuous. The coronavirus’s evolution is not yet predictable; its effects are nowhere near benign. This might be the longest stretch of quasi-normalcy that humanity has had since 2020’s start, but experts can’t yet tell whether we’re at the beginning of post-pandemic stability or in the middle of a temporary reprieve.'

Yes, in the olfactory system of #Drosophila, projection neurons respond with the derivative of the olfactory input, albeit somewhat meddled with intensity too (and further confounded by habituation). Useful to navigate odour gradients. See:

This week, I highlight the work of Zhu et al. in Nature Immunology. The authors examined the effects of stress on the gut microbiota in mice and found that changes in a Lactobacillus species were associated with increased numbers of IL-17-secreting gamma-delta T cells in the gut. These cells migrated to the meninges and were associated with changes in behavior. Targeting this axis may have therapeutic benefits for patients with depression.
