I spoke with the senior author, Matteo Iannacone of in Milan for the earlier this year about models for research, including dramatic differences between aerosol vs intranasal exposure to the virus in mice - the of the disease is very different.

An interesting detail in this @biorxivpreprint from @iannaconelab on the Nirmatrelvir is that they (the researchers) produced the molecule in-house:

"Nirmatrelvir was synthesized prior to its publication (4) via a multistep convergent approach that differed from the reported procedure (3, 17, 18). Details and synthesis intermediates are shown in Figure 1A and in Materials and Methods."

'Our structural, genetic, and phenotypic analyses in this large epidemiological cohort reinvigorate the often-neglected interplay between APOE ɛ2 dosage and sex and link APOE alleles to inter-individual brain structural differences indicative of ADRD familial risk.'

'Fanatical supporters of Brazil’s outgoing president, Jair Bolsonaro, have torched cars and buses and tried to storm the federal police headquarters in the country’s capital in what one commentator called a botched attempt to spark a January 6-style turmoil.

The violence erupted on Monday evening after the leftwing politician who defeated Bolsonaro in October’s historic election – former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva – had his victory officially ratified by Brazil’s electoral court.'

'Studies with a fluorescent version of Rapalink-1 and a PEG-linked fluorescent marker control showed that such linked molecules in general might be achieving cellular entry via the IFITM proteins, which is a rather surprising result.'

'In fact, international interdependence may have made the ongoing war in Ukraine more likely. It’s not obviously silly to suggest that Putin expected Europe to accept the conquest of Kyiv because of its dependence on Russian natural gas.'

Let's celebrate the season with a bit of science! Starting a daily countdown of 10 modern and fascinating ideas about the brain for us all to discuss. How likely is this to be true? And if true, what are the implications?

Brain idea 10: Our moods may depend not just on what's happening in our brain, but also our gut. The gist of the idea is that the gut can send distress signals to the brain that can trigger fear and anxiety.

Hi all, I'm new here, so here's an #introduction.

I'm an impact AI entrepreneur who's worked with algorithmic influence for more than a decade.

A while back, when I was running a social games startup, I realized the dangers of addicting people to games with behavioral algorithms. And then Netflix, Spotify and TikTok happened.

Ever since I've worked on algorithms for positive impact, now building healthier social with equelsocial.com

I look forward to contributing to the #fediverse!

"The publisher PLOS is marking nearly 50 articles by Didier Raoult, the French scientist who became controversial for promoting hydroxychloroquine for treating COVID-19, with expressions of concern while it investigates potential research ethics violations in the work."

'Here, we performed uniform gain-of-function screens of all 44 human FOX transcription factors to identify and classify new regulators of the Wnt/β-catenin pathway. By combining β-catenin reporter assays with Wnt pathway-focused qPCR arrays and proximity proteomics of selected FOX family members, we determine that most FOX proteins are involved in the regulation of Wnt pathway activity and the expression of Wnt ligands and target genes.'

Want to know some of the work that supports for ? The latest quarterly update is out and includes updates on case finding activities from Nigeria and Viet Nam. Read to find out more about how Nigeria increased their TB case detection by 50% from 138,591 in 2020 to 207,785 TB cases in 2021 - really impressive work! bit.ly/3EzhY5Q

Hearing talk of an 'evolutionary ceiling' for SARS-CoV-2 again, so a timely reminder of the point at which we just had Alpha, Beta and Gamma, and the argument was made that they were proof that there is a single fitness peak that lineages would climb to and that would be the end.

We set up a very efficient system to install premature stop codons or disrupt splice sites in Drosophila and made some interesting discoveries along the way. Will unpack these in separate threads in the coming days. For now here is the manuscript:
