Really excited to see @thomasinselmd join us here.

Insel has devoted his career to improving mental health. He is a former Director of the National Institutes of Mental Health in the US, where he oversaw a transition in emphasis to brain-based approaches. Since leaving NIMH, he has focused on supporting behavioral and community based interventions. His central message is that a lot of convincing evidence tells us that those are some of the best interventions we have right now.

Insel's book, Healing, is both empathetic and optimistic. I recommend it to anyone who is suffering or knows someone that is suffering from mental illness.

Hello all!

I'll post an official introduction (hopefully) in the coming days, but for now I'm keeping it short as I emigrate from Twitter to Mastodon (and specifically to genomics.social thanks to @tim).

In the meantime, please enjoy this punny "ugly sweater" I made for our holiday party!

Another abandoned building. Have you noticed a pattern? The way human created things return to baseline is endlessly interesting to me. See my username. #Abandoned #BlackAndWhite

Hi All

I'm Tanja, also a recent Twitter migrant ..

I'm a biologist with a focus on neuroscience. In my postdoc in Ole Paulsen's lab (Neuronal Oscillation Group) at Cambridge University (UK) I investigate the role of neuromodulators on synaptic plasticity and memory.
I also like filming stuff and 3D animation, so will occasionally post science videos here, in addition to other science-related posts.
Looking forward to meeting you all here!

A common response to posting peer reviews (e.g. eLife, EMBO J) is it's wasted effort because no-one will read them. Well, breaking news: not many people read the paper either...

EMBO estimate ~10% of readers look at the peer reviews. Given a peer review takes ~5 hours to generate and one would certainly conclude a paper takes >50 hours to generate, then a readers/hour-worked calculation surely argues in favor of posting peer reviews - no?

"Differing from its predecessor, ENLIGHT has been designed and evaluated with two real-world clinical scenarios in mind: personalized oncology, where one matches the best treatment to a patient based on a fixed decision threshold, and CTD, where the goal is to a priori exclude non-responding patients in the best possible manner. #Drosophila #Advent Day17: On to another genus with Hirtodrosophila confusa. The genus #Hirtodrosophila is paraphyletic doi.org/10.1093/gbe/evab179, but the UK species are all members of single clade. This species lays its eggs in large decaying fungi jstor.org/stable/2408009, and is often found in large numbers on dryads saddle (Polyporus squamosus). Seemingly very well adapted to the Scottish climate, it is apparently unable to breed above 24°C. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/fu #Diptera #Fungi

“Funding proposals put forth by developing countries to generate new and additional funding dedicated specifically to biodiversity-related initiatives need to be taken seriously. Developing countries hold the overwhelming majority of the world’s biodiversity and have a key role to play in this agenda.”
