"From time to time we all get a bit restless
With no one advertising to us constantly
But the tribe at the former airport
Some nights has meat and dancing
If you don't mind gathering and hunting
We're all still pretty good at eating on the run.
Things it would have been helpful to know before the revolution" - Father John Misty
Similar time, similar story:
Trevor Brooking:
"I think a lot of older players in the system are damaged goods because technically they're not able to cope with the demands," he conceded.
"If you can't play it from the back, or in tight areas, it doesn't matter how good the coach is, you're not going to make it."
Yes, it's the Daily Mail, yes, it's 2007, but doesn't this sound familiar?
"#England and the #FA get themselves in this position because they do not learn the lessons of history and are thus destined to repeat them.
...
Never mind the performances of its foreign-driven club sides, the English game is on its knees. It didn't need its own governing body to kick it when it was down."

@oldrawgabbit I read yesterday that the shooter had been identified by fingerprints and DNA matching, so I'm thinking this is a no.
You read this and it gives you hope the #Olympics in #Paris2024 may actually be a sustainable and lasting celebration of sports and its infrastructure

Unpopular opinion: Apart from the one manager who led England to victory in the 1966 England World Cup (side eye), Southgate has been the best #England manager ever: WC QF and SF, two Euro finals.

@gpollara Some beautiful examples of buildings that have been restored and repuposed. One of the main architects mentioned there have more examples on their website.

#TimothySnyder : Political Violence: Reflections from the 1920s and 1930s
"Nothing in recent American political life resembles Trump’s call for “Second-Amendment people” to kill Hillary Clinton, his mockery of Paul Pelosi after an attempted murder, his belittling of Gretchen Whitmer after a kidnapping attempt, the stochastic violence he directs against critics to intimidate them and against his fellow Republicans to keep them in line..."
@urbanfoxe Jealous looks from over here. You got Shakira, we had Shearer.
How does the relationship a developer has with the computing resources around them change when climate and ecology are brought into the picture? Does this produce unexpected other changes, for instance, I speculate without evidence that it might reframe your interactions with technology to be less abstract. Despite the massive crisis of climate concerns, is there a protective effect from this? Might this make some technology work feel less alienated from the world?
@wordshaper @ZachWeinersmith The shame is, there's some really interesting research being done that's critical to any of these utopian visions. Sciences and engineering, obviously, but also "human" sciences" like architecture and anthropology. With the obsession with the rockets and handwavey "we'll figure it out or maybe die gloriously" that work gets overlooked. A shame as it's often very accessible and has applications beyond "Mars Base Alpha".
@LaNaehForaday @ThomHartmann As I recall, the first few episodes just show where Offered is at that point of capture. Much more horrifying is the build up shown in flashback in later seasons: their normal lives and relationships suddenly criminalised by a religious fascist movement that was allowed to grow until it' was too powerful for individuals and the state to resist.
If you feel very powerless, try not to express this on to those people who have even less power than you.
Even if that's usually the only way that you can express how powerless you feel 🥺
What happened in and regarding Russia on Wednesday, July 10 (roughly speaking)? I summarize these musings and happenings as best I can for Meduza in a daily newsletter. Here’s the latest edition: https://meduza.io/en/brief/2024/07/11/the-real-russia-today
@kevinrothrock Any thoughts on differing engagement levels?
@fulelo And now a trip to The Shite House to meet the American Rezident.
Just another worried little citizen of this modern-day Pompeii. Techie at UCL, working on Process Automation with MS Power Platform. Scatterbrain, interested in education, languages, Space and lots of disparate things. sorry.
Keeping my space toots at @astrodad as an experiment in self-moderation :)
