Visited Jeff's blog earlier this morning, to see a poem he linked to, a nice one.

Noticed a link to other post, and it's a lovely article - about operating a crypto mining at home, with off the shelf components. Which paid for itself nicely, despite what we hear about server farms being unbeatable (which is true for Bit Coin, BTC)

His setup was specifically for mining Ether, and by nature that process benefit systems using Graphics cards for the processing.

Very cool project! Glad it worked out, the hardware is exquisite. He explains it well too. 🎅

Rant of the Day.

It's unbelievable that Apple locks such basic UI feature as controlling the default icon sizes on iPhone and iPads.

I have an ipad mini, and like it's portability, it travels with me when I won't take a laptop, it's on my bag when a larger screen than a cell phone comes handy.

Now got an iPad 4 with the 9.7" larger screen, and honestly, the icons look weird, too large on it.

"That's the way it is, that's the way it always has been. 4 by 5 " is what web search tells me.

Other than a nice tool, which requires Rooting (aka jailbreaking) the device. 😔

For the record, here is the tool I mentioned, it seems a nice and basic right of a user - I have always had that in Windows, which mac people like to demean. Smoke that, Apple.

Trying this out to see how it works, maybe useful.

But hit a snag! 😉

"Netgear Nighthawk AX12 review: A high-end 802.11ax router with bags of bandwidth"

" The Nighthawk AX12 is an exceptional router. It’s one of the first wave of 802.11ax devices (also known as Wi-Fi 6), offering real-world download speeds of 60MB/sec and more when accessed from a compatible client. What’s more, it’s the first router we’ve ever seen with 8x8 MU-MIMO capability. That means it can smoothly handle up to eight simultaneous wireless connections – perfect for a modern household that’s packed with smart devices.

The catch? All 802.11ax routers are expensive and this one is pricier than most. Sure, the specs are impressive, but are they really worth £360?"

I am a big Fan of History, and the WWII period is one of my favourites. Just saw a nice post at the birdsite, by a WW2 Live account.

Searched Fediverse, and indeed we have a bot bridging content here too. 😉

Learn more about the Fediverse?

That's the part many of us here inhabit - the Mastodon instances, and many other sites, serving different needs.

"Fediverse
is a portmanteau of two words “federation” and “universe”

It is a common name for federated social networks running on free open software on a myriad of servers across the world. Historically, this term has included only microblogging platforms supporting a set of protocols called OStatus. This didn't do justice to a large number of projects that federate, share same values and are reasonably popular. With the appearance and wide adoption of a new standard protocol called ActivityPub it makes no sense to further divide the federated world into “OStatus” and “non-OStatus” projects. This guide unites all interconnected federated networks under one term “Fediverse”. "

"The Future?

At the moment, several projects in the space are working to adopt new supplementary protocols, with the intent of building better bridges between one another. The proposed development might end up looking like this:"

There's The Federation -- and The Fediverse.

"Many newcomers to the federated web may hear of a casual reference to the fediverse, and may be curious about what that term means. A simple explanation might be that it’s a portmanteau of “federation” and “universe”, but it’s actually a little bit more complicated than that. Let’s dive into the nature of this beast, along with some of the history that comes with it.

At present, there are two supernetworks in the federated social communication space, and they run on different protocols. They are known as The Fediverse, and The Federation. While both supernetworks function in similar ways and even have similar aims, they each come from a different history of development, and by extension, a different stack. The overlapping series of networks can be referred to in macro as The Free Network."

Ever wonder what is out there in The Federation?

"The Federation refers to a global social network composed of nodes that talk to each other. Each of them is an installation of software which supports one of the federated social web protocols. "

Trying out something new -- Friendica

The Contacts list in Friendica is where you can see all of your contacts. Two types, which are shown in separate places in mastodon, all together here.

* Mutual Friendship : we follow each other.

* You are a Fan of : I follow that user, he/she does not follow me yet.

From the small icons in the Right column (see highlight in green), we can directly send a DM (in mastodon, called PM in Friendica). Or :

- View contact's Network Activity (posts, etc)

- View their Profile pages directly.

- Unfollow them with one click. ("Drop Contact")
