* Have you ever heard about Friendica ? *

Friendica is interesting; I have an account but used it very little. Should to a more in-depth test and report on it.

Friendica is part of the vast Fediverse Network -- mastodon is the largest group, but not all of it.

friendi.ca for general information.

Screenshots: friendi.ca/about/screenshots/

Definitely has some nice features :

- enhanced text formatting, with GUI controls on editor.
- Edit, anytime you want, any of your old posts.
- images can be attached to all posts.

** Get to Know it? -- there's a Try instance. tryfriendica.de/

Accounts there will auto-delete in one week, so you don't waste any space or resources. Like it? get a real instance account. Don't like it? just forget it and it goes away soon.

And it federates easily - - my account there is @rgx@nerdica.net
Nerdica is a nice node on the Friendica network.

Lots more instances listed - here : dir.friendica.social/servers

* Mastodon - Options for Moving an Account ? *

*** "Take your information and do what you want with it." ***

That suggestive text sounds like Freedom of movement is granted and important, doesn't it? That is directly copied from Documents at JoinMastodon.org -docs.joinmastodon.org/user/mov.

The truth is less rosy though. There are easy and reliable ways to :

* Export the list of people you Follow.
* Export lists of people you Mute (hiding their posts from your view)
* Export lists of people and instances you Blocked (barring their content reaching you).

But, sadly -- your personal data, all the Toots you spent time in, the images and videos contained in them. Not easily accessible.

If an instance dies (and it does happen), it's all Lost. We need better. Facebook is now offering a wonderful User Data Export tool.

Yes, I believe so. And wrote a blog page about that *which is currently my most popular one* -- "Is it Important, which Instance you are in?" write.tedomum.net/rgx/is-it-im)

This will be Part 1, with detailed suggestions on finding and evaluating Instances, via Fediverse.network or Federation.info sites. I will walk thru the exact criteria I used on a personal search about 10 days ago, and the nice results found.

@zleap I would suggest a better course.

* a simple graphics editor is a Must Have tool for any serious contributor. Along with a nice Text editor and a good file manager, so we can store and retrieve things with ease, organize and all.

Tools that I use and suggest -- Keep in mind that I am a seasoned Windows Server admin, and love ; not productive at all in Linux, although I recognize Unix is tops.

All recommendations are for Windows platform. Equivalents for other O.S.es abound.

* Image Editor -- the wonderful Irfanview does it for me. All. The. Time. Simple and powerful. Free. Does software get any better than that simple description?

irfanview.com/ for details and downloads. Get the Plugins package there too!

* Text Editors - these are like Religions, and equally charged discussions will come alive when what's best is discussed. Without opinions offered on others, EditPad Lite is the one I use and recommend.

editpadlite.com/

* File Manager -- essential, can't live without it. Used various over the past 30 years of intensive life in Computing. Nowadays the Windows 10 Explorer is good and daily used here.

Excellent ones can be found and used. Honours mention to MultiCommander, I use the x64 bit version.

Update :

I have just finished posting a new Suggestion issue at Glitch-Social's Github.

...which summarizes the findings I described in a Forum post, and requests consideration of the idea of adding these enhancements into the Glitch-Social code base.

Forum post : discourse.qoto.org/t/mastodon-

If that was done, and the source for Eskuero's Collapsed Mastodon is available for review and adoption, all users could benefit, without the need of using an add-on, and better compatibility with future releases as changes are made.

The Suggestion is on this page. github.com/glitch-soc/mastodon

....and a question was asked recently, in our Discourse Forum. Right on my popular "Discover Pleroma" topic.

>> Is Pleroma still a thing and can there be a QOTO version of Pleroma?

Yes.

There's Work in Progress, a Qoto-Roma so to speak (being creative here, might not stick).

>> I have an account on QOTO and I want the Pleroma interface.

You would get it, as comes with two front end or User Interface options -- details in the post bellow!

>> Wondering if there is a ‘best of both worlds’ scenario there.

I am wondering too, as it's something I am getting adamant about.

Mastodon limitations are Intentional in some cases, and I am tired of waiting for progress.

I am charting my own course and sailing the seas, finding nice harbours and dropping in.

Won't stay using mastodon much longer, as I already have nice Glitch-Social and Pleroma accounts.

Hopefully it will happen here too, as I have a lot invested in this instance, my main account.

-- my Blog post yesterday on Pleroma as an Alternative to Mastodon was surprisingly well received.

I have received messages from various people, asking for recommendations of good Pleroma instances to join.

And i am working on it. Serious. As I write here, I am logged in and chatting with friends I just met, all in various Pleroma nodes, that responded to my post there, thanking the admin for the service.

I will prepare a detailed Blog post, with more suggestions and reasons, but for now, kudos and a mention are appropriate.

* Nomad is my Heart. *

To love is sometimes to let go, respect someone's need to be out and observe, marvel at so much the world has to offer.

Sometimes people have a hard time accepting that, while part of a community, or in a closer relationship with someone, all humans have curiosity and it's rich to see and let it blossom.

I offer this post to my friend Coralie, we met very recently, and yet she has such a sensibility, that it saw deeply into my heart and soul.

Yesterday she surprised me, messaging privately and offering a comment that delighted me -- that she could perceive my inner nature so clearly.

It closely related to the theme of this page. A toot, written from the hip, not polished or edited but coming from inside, prose flowing. A response to a local system administrator - qoto.org/@freemo/1043089546768, which sometimes shows concern about my wanderings all over the Fediverse.

This morning, she favourited and boosted it - which brought it into my notifications and a re-read confirms it's poetic, and should be published. To Coralie, I offer this.

Thanks dear friend.

The Pleroma FE (front end, or user interface -- Intro Guide here -- docs-develop.pleroma.social/ba )

...is a bit unusual for a mastodon user - but it HAS a second choice of Client;

Many Pleroma instances have the Glitch-Social Web client as an option, sometimes as a link in their Front pages even. That one is nearly identical to the one here in our instance.

(except, it has added features if you are interested in using them. Like MarkDown text formatting support, which MastoDonT )

Pleroma, which is a newer and more advanced platform for the Fediverse. It can do the same as Mastodon and more.

It is also built from scratch to be more streamlined - requires less computing resources, runs on less powerful machines.

And it has Extra features too.

Many people might not know it, or heard a little. But it is a really interesting alternative.

I do have accounts in a couple of Pleroma instances, and plan to investigate the software more closely, and write a Blog on my findings.

Quite pleased now that I figured out a way to get a comfortable User Interface for me while using it -- Pleroma has a different look, by design, but you can also use it with a Mastodon Front End.

And then, it's just like what you and I are used to. Easier.

* a question and suggestion to TeDomum staff, regarding the Write.freely blog display format *

@angedestenebres
@tedomum

------

Hello Ange, TeDomum!

Bon jour, and thank you for the excellent service I enjoy with the Write.Freely instance at TeDomum.

I wanted to write to you and ask a question -- regarding the displaying of pages in the instance.

From the very beginning of my usage of WF, I tried to understand how it displayed pages and images, and realized that it defaults to a 640 pixels wide column on my desktop or laptop displays.

Since then, I have always resized any images I use to fit that exactly - avoiding on-the-fly scaling, which degrades the image and causes delay. So far it has worked well for me.

When I open the URL of one of my pages directly, for example :

write.tedomum.net/rgx/firefox-

...it will display as created, optimally. Happy author!

However, when looking at my Blog view, the stream of all recent posts : write.tedomum.net/rgx/

...then I am dismayed to notice that my careful layout is mangled, since it seems to use a slightly narrower display width.

Sadly, that damages the presentation.

Could I ask you to consider reviewing the CSS for this function? I just took a screenshot (attached) and I do see the image size in a post is preserved at 640p, so no scaling is involved.

However -- the spacing on HR dividers is greatly compressed, and in general it seems to use a smaller size font, than the same page viewed directly by its URL.

[ Also posted at our Discourse Forums here : discourse.qoto.org/t/a-request - which might preserve the formatting and present better ]

Attachments, two images :

1. layout as seen on rgx blog feed stream (noticeable compression on vertical spacing; fonts seem ragged and possibly a bit smaller)

2. layout as seen on a page itself, with easier to read spacing on paragraphs and Horizontal Ruler breaks.

Merci !

Rob.

@design_RG @rgx @joaopinheiro I run several GlitchSoc instances to choose from: https://muensterland.social , https://mstdn.es , https://mastodon.b...

users, hello.

I have been reading the posts from this hashtag and collect some information for a new Forum post I am preparing.

Here at Qoto.org we now have a new Pinafore Discussions Forum, at our Discourse forums. I am the one who asked for it, since we have the forum in place and thought it could be useful to all users.

Question -- I collected a list of 4 independant instances of Pinafore, from posts made here earlier.

These instances are at todon.nl, x0r.be, cybre.space and brap.party.

With the two that Nolan runs, the normal one and the dev version, that's 6 on my list.

Any other instances, with public access granted, that you know of?

My post on this subject is here :

discourse.qoto.org/t/listing-o

The Forums are publicly readable, responding requires an account login, which is open, free signup.

Thank you for any possible hints, comments.
