Back to Mastodon after the #Twitter exodus. I left Twitville years ago and set this account up. Personally I'm not a fan of instance versus federated, but 🤷♂️ whatever. As before, I'm mostly here for #economy #religion #sociology #classicfilm and generally related topics.
@theonetotheleft Not sure what you mean with 'instance versus federated' because Qoto is an instance, and we're federated just fine?
@trinsec Things like finding specific people. Search is better now than 4 years ago, but it was trying then. Also the standards can be different on each instance. Sure, you can research the instance first, and block people, but it can also potentially get chaotic if an instance changes its rules or stance on something. Basically balancing federated and instance is can be more complicated than other social media (and often confusing to new people).
It's true that it can be confusing and a bit more complicated to new people here. But it's also what makes this actually different, something that can be a long term solution. Without the decentralization and federation, this would be just yet another social platform for people to jump on to and see it slowly decay (however well intentioned the creators originally are) and then have to jump ship again. Federation opens up many ways to avoid that, and the complexity is (unfortunately) a necessary price to pay for that.
