I keep seeing lots of long-time #fediverse users saying 'don't favourite posts it does nothing' but actually when you favourite my posts it makes me smile and I'm sure I'm not the only one.
marriage, immigration
I won't post much at this time, as I'm preoccupied by the return of my American partner.
He's back in (Cape) town (heh) and we're tying up loose threads—sorting his belongings, emptying his apartment, etc. At the same time, we're grappling with the prospect of marriage, green cards, immigration …
I won't romanticize it. It's all draining, consuming stuff. Even the marriage, which would normally be a cause for merriment, has taken on a different cast in the light of his leaving.
A little disappointed that we're using #AcademicMastodon. #AcademicFedi or #AcademicToots when #Macademia was RIGHT THERE.
@derek I have a big problem with this "humble white savior" complex. It assumes all white people are in the position you are in. It's false.

On the one hand, Mastodon triggers 580+ HTTP requests every time I post anything (because my followers are distributed across 580+ servers)
But any time I visit a single web page in my browser it can trigger 30-100+ HTTP requests. So posting to Mastodon may end up equivalent to visiting 5 web pages?
Jury is still out for me on if the way Mastodon works is a significant problem in this respect
Security researcher David Schütz has won a $70,000 bug bounty after stumbling across what appears to have been an elementary way to unlock any Google Pixel phone without knowing the passcode.

@trinsec The web app is good. I love how sleek the official Mastodon app was, tho, and I'm trying to get as close to that as possible. So far, Yuito seems like my best fit. I'll fall back on the web if Yuito doesn't work out—there doesn't appear to be another option.
It appears that the official #MastodonApp simply doesn't have the download functionality programmed yet. There's an option to download an image but it doesn't actually do anything.
I don't like how barebones the #MastodonApp is, don't like the clunkiness of #Tusky. Now trying #Yuito.
Where does the #MastodonApp store downloaded images by default? I saved an image and I can't find it on my phone.
@freemo It's for the best. It always hurts communities when they grow too quickly. A few growth spurts here and there is good. Unchecked growth is cancerous.
South Africa
@malmorrow I find it difficult to square your conception of the DA as anti-progressive with the party's progressive local policies and government. Anti-woke does not mean anti-progress. Indeed, show me a more progressive South African party. There isn't one.
Why does the #MastodonApp not have "unlisted" as a publicity layer (? IDK what to call it) to post to alongside "public", "followers only", and "only people I mention"? Is that an oversight or a deliberate design decision? Either way, its absence is odd.
running
Today's #RunningMusic:
"On a Roll" by #MileyCyrus performing as Ashley O in the Black Mirror episode, "Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too"
But the bootleg remix version that mashes it with #Eiffel65 's "Blue (Da Ba Dee)"

@Pat I agree that politics shouldn't get an automatic content warning. However, if the issue is likely to be inflammatory, I'll voluntarily put it behind a CW because it's a distraction for a science-focused instance like QOTO.
If I were on a more political or general instance, I might behave differently. But maybe not—I appreciate that my sympathetic nervous system is not constantly prodded by every post like it would be on other social networks.
