I'm still not used to the "Circle" / layer stuff on Mastodon. I'm often uncertain which to post to, and I often forget to specify a "Circle" / layer. It makes the neurotic in me unhappy.

1) The shadow across your face makes the photo look unprofessional.

2) If everyone else is looking at the camera, you should be looking at the camera.

What's missing from these pictures?

No on-street parking makes all the difference in the cities of #Japan. The 1962 "proof-of-parking" law means you buy a car, you've got to show you've got a place—off public streets—to warehouse it.

homophobia, mass murder

Mass shooting at Club Q in Colorado Springs.

My partner moved to Colorado this year. As a foreigner, I had always conceptualized the state as rather progressive, so I didn't believe him when he told me it's homophobic.

I don't like the Appeal to Lived Experience because people are so often unreliable narrators of their own realities but incidents like this certainly make me question my position. At least, Lived Experience is a cue to investigate a matter further.

@trinsec I don't use Chrome, so went to their website to find the Firefox addon, and the advertising on their website made me uneasy. It seems like a trap of some sort. There are enough Firefox addons that I'm sure I can find something similar without worrying about unwanted surprises.

@undefined @trinsec I don't understand why this is a subscription service :pain_3:

You might have seen somebody using the proverb Vox Populi, Vox Dei. What was missing was the context in which it was used:

Nec audiendi qui solent dicere, Vox populi, vox Dei, quum tumultuositas vulgi semper insaniae proxima sit.

In case you do not speak Latin, it means in English:

And those people should not be listened to who keep saying the voice of the people is the voice of God since the riotousness of the crowd is always very close to madness.

Mastodon doesn't like that block list search tool because it exposes how they've been quietly spreading false propaganda about half the trans instances as "transphobic" to push them out tbh

Whenever I'm tempted to think that a new thing seems too complicated, I read newspaper articles about pizza from the early 1950s.

("Detect text from picture" doesn't seem to work from the web app on Android. I tried it and waited for a minute before canceling it—was I just impatient?)

Look at my find! Comparative from the 1970s covering South African, American, British, French and German laws. When I studied law, this was my favorite legal field—so it makes sense I ultimately got into .

I see quite a lot of #Science posts expressing concern if The Public will follow their #TwitterMigration over on here.

Here's the thing: they don't even have to. Every #Mastodon account has an #RSS feed. For example, here's mine:
mstdn.social/@rysiek.rss

Every hashtag has an RSS feed as well (as seen from a given instance), for example:
mstdn.social/tags/Science.rss

Your audiences can follow you without ever setting up an account on fedi, with any RSS reader.

A typical European car is parked 92% of the time. It spends 1/5th of its driving time looking for parking. Its 5 seats only move 1.5 people. 86% of its fuel never reaches the wheels, & most of the energy that does, moves the car, not people.

I’m sure North American, Australasian, vehicles are similar.

Sound efficient?

Never forget, a 13-year study of a dozen cities found that protected bike-lanes led to a drastic decline in fatalities for ALL ROAD USERS. And painted bike-lanes? No safety improvement at all. As for sharrows, it’s safer to NOT have them. Via #StreetsblogUSA, read their article. #bikelanes #bikes #cities #transportation #mobility #sharrows #infrastructure #urbanplanning

They say “We can’t do that. We’re not #Amsterdam.” You respond “Amsterdam wasn’t always like that either,” showing before & after transformations illustrating that the cities we admire made CHOICES. And they’re still making choices TODAY. They make more tired excuses. You don’t accept them either.
