Philosophical discourse
We only have #today. So whatever you do with it, know it only matters in the whole grand scheme right now. Drop the pretensions that what you are doing is important for the sake of others. For a truly #happylife realise that it simply doesn't matter. Everyone is on their own path and yours is just for you and everything is unfolding as it must whether you think it should or not. So when you feel frustration, instead of reacting, let your mind for a moment think of an empty space and you will see that all feelings are simple a construct of an unconscious for which you choose not to take control. Now you are free. You have mastered your self.
@ParkinJim - they don't like young people. They don't vote for them. Its a disgrace.
@trinsec - that is probably 99% of all uses these days and possibly rebating some hinges. Keep them sharp for that though. You'll thank me next time.
@trinsec ironically, I think there's fewer tasks these days that demand a chisel. But I'm a wood frame enthusiast and for that, there's no substitute to the joy of creating a joint.
@trinsec - there's DIY, and then there's art. 😉
Two pieces of advice for a better life.
1) Always keep your #chisels sharp.
2) Find a good #tradesperson and ditch the #DIY.
Mastodonners.. This is Patch, the studio cat.
Patch loves nothing more than lying amidst the patch cables of a nice warm synth, or maybe stretching out across a vintage keyboard.
Despite appearances, Patch is 100% ruthless (Think Cato/Clouseau but with more scratchy violence)
The studio is hers, obvs, she just lets me use it, if I behave myself and turn on all the nice warm boxes.
Patch prefers ambient & cool jazz. Nothing too loud.
Beware of the #Potholes here
@ddlyh @hairylarry @ajroach42 - not everyone will move and some will struggle with their having a generally smaller circle. And maybe that's a good thing.
@ajroach42 it's fantastic that such a gem as #mastodon was just waiting in the wings ready to go when #twitter imploded.
Here's your irregular reminder that:
Twitter was a multi-billion dollar company with thousands of employees.
Mastodon is a niche hobbyist product run by volunteers
The fact that we're being seen as a viable alternative to them is an admission that a federated, decentralized future is not only possible, but desirable.
Mastodon is not one thing, or one place. It's a network of many things and many places. We don't have a spokesperson (I mean, there's me. I'm the official spokesperson for 💯 of the fediverse, but beyond me there is no spokesperson) we don't have consensus on moderation or blocking or tools or what is good and what is bad. Some of us are professional SREs and Sysadmins, some of us aren't. Some of our instances have been around for 5+ years, some won't be here in six months.
And that's good! All of it, every last bit of it is good.
We're wrestling power away from the billionaire class, in real time, and reclaiming it for the People.
On here? I can recommend looking into lists, they're kind of additional timelines for your own use. So if someone spams a lot but you'd still like to be able to see their posts fairly easily, you could dump them in a list timeline that you name 'Spammy people I follow' or something. :)
😞 I just realized that Elon musk unban Andrew Tate... 🤦🏾♂️ That's one of the worst decisions....Twitter is slightly becoming more and more toxic with this kind of decisions. #riptwitter.
Solving dependencies for conda packages used in computational chemistry is spectacularly annoying. But while I'm at it -- why not write something here.
It's been three months of work with machine learning, and over four full years of theoretical modelling overall. I learned an important lesson: the values your model predicts are not important. It is relatively easy to make a prediction using numpy, scipy and a bunch of polynomials.
It is far more important to know the applicability domain of the model, its error and trust intervals of obtained parameters. Clean the dataset, reduce the number of parameters, write out the necessary equations and try to reduce the error using first-principle approach. Modern science studies deviations and reproducibility, and rarely values themselves. Which is a good thing.
Use of content warnings
The #contentwarnings feature in #mastodon should be used much more often than you think. It really does make the #experience much more #interesting and #engaging. Still not entirely sold on the way #quoting is negated a lot but that's just because I thought it was a good way to promote mostly thinking differently about a post. Finally, #remember #hashtags and #bekind

Let's bring #FontsonFriday to Mastodon...The beautifully rich Romanesque font in Bancigny church, Aisne, France. Grey Tournai marble...
Engineer, Dad, Inventor, Stoic, Philosopher, STEM Ambassador, Teacher, Student, Father, Occasional Folk Musician, and obviously a Knight of Camelot.
In life, we should all attempt to bond at least two things together on a regular basis using contact adhesive.
Do not be disheartened by life. Humans are a truly infuriating species. Be kind. Peace ✌️
