#introduction

Hi there, my name is Evan.

I'm a web developer, aspiring writer and permaculture enthusiast from Montreal.

I discovered the fediverse around two years ago, and ever since, I've been extremely passionate about advocating for the dream of autonomous, peer-to-peer social media.

This recent catalyst from the #twittermigration inspired me to finally launch this node here on public.garden. Seeing the fediverse become so recognized in the mainstream lexicon -- even if it is known just as "mastodon" to most -- has been both extremely joyful and extremely surreal to me.

As for my other endeavors, I am a professional #wordpress web developer, with a special interest in developing within the Gutenberg Block Editor ecosystem. I am excited about Gutenberg as much as I am excited about the fediverse, but I won't go into too much detail. I am slowly building a freelancing career at https://evan.works. If you want a really sweet blog, portfolio or e-commerce site, hit me up!

I am also working on Poetry Garden ( @poetrygarden ) an open access Wordpress multisite that allows users to create customizable websites that serve as personal writing portfolios. It is currently launched as an MVP.

I am working on integrating it with the fediverse using the incredible plugin by @pfefferle . I also did a minor contribution to that plugin to integrate the federation better with Buddypress, the most trusted social media plugin for WP.

I am also working to incorporate a robust site building system using a series of tailor-developed Gutenberg blocks. Gutenberg and the Fediverse in one project? Oh my.

Finally, I am interested in #permaculture, #intentionalcommunity, sustainable living and minimalism.

And I make dolls out of cattails. Here are two pictures!

This should be my last introduction toot! I mentioned my professional focus ( signal analysis) in my last toot. Now, for my other non-research engagements...

I am a who uses tools like and to prototype fun projects. I have my own fleet of 3d printers and support equipment.

As a signal processing engineer, I'm also very interested in (software-defined radio). I'm working on two pet projects right now employing SDR and my maker tools for backyard and satellite signal reception. While not entirely novel end-goals, the work is very engaging and rewarding! I hope to package the results for science outreach in in the near future.

Everyone should expect neuroimaging research toots from me as well as updates on my projects and resources for and engagement in the classroom. I hope to contribute to by sharing my demos, resources, and projects for bringing innovative thinking, science, and engineering into the classroom.

I love and outdoor activities. I'm a novice in (microscope as well as DSLR) and am looking for hints and suggestions for my entry into . Any advice? Let me know! I have a strong love of and , so expect my gushing about fish on occasion. I also have a pet parakeet, so expect some bird antics along the way! It can't all be work and seriousness, after all!

Just finished comment syndication between publications on user-created sites and their corresponding listings on poetry.garden/community/public -- a key feature for the concept behind Poetry Garden, a site-building platform catered to literature publishing, and one of the first Buddypress and WP Multisite instances with ActivityPub Integration :) Feeling excited

@freemo @mcduquesne

Thank you so much! Do you think the QOTO infrastructure would work on Pleroma, or would it be largely simpler as a Mastodon instance? I'm very interested in soapbox.pub and it's potential for theme-ability.

For qoto.org, have you ever considered adding a Mobilizon service as a SSO? events.qoto.org or something?

@freemo @mcduquesne

Thank you so much! Really grateful for the innovations you've done with qoto.org and really looking forward to collaborate! I have a domain public.garden that I am looking to make into an accessible fediverse node :)

@freemo @mcduquesne

Perfectly understandable! And that is very kind of you to offer help. I will get started on this soon and message you if I have any questions!

After installation I'll try to work on a nice frontend for the landing page too :) Really excited about this, thanks so much once again!

@freemo @mcduquesne

I just got the domain! I'd be happy to run the server myself, thank you! I have a server of federated services I am starting, but since I am new to this I am still getting set up (trying to get Mobilizon and Pleroma working).

I would be very glad to host the groups service too! I can let you know when my server is set up, or if you want, I can also point the DNS to one of your servers too!

@freemo Very interesting, so it can sense if gup.pe or something is set to be a group actor? Do friendica groups get tracked too?

Great to hear that Pleroma's group protocol will be compatible! That is a great step forward

@freemo Yes, it is really impressive!

Do you add the group servers to check manually?

And do you think this sort of integration would be possible on Pleroma as well?

@bonifartius thanks for the input. It seems like the payment is only one time, and then very cheap after that. 13$ per month is quite sustainable, I'd be willing to personally pay it for the accessibility benefits it would provide to federated infrastructure

@freemo Hi, and thank you! Great question, I really do think so! Accessibility is really important, and I feel often overlooked in the tech community.

Groups is one of the key obstacles in popularizing the fediverse as a fb alternative.

It is easier to tell a newcomer "just tag @public.group," than "@groups.qoto.org " --although it is a small detail, I think attention to it has high payoff.

Plus the scale, since this improved UX would affect every single mastodon instance, makes this seem like a valuable use of resources.

What do you think? And thanks again for your kind regards :)

Hi people of Qoto! Nice to meet you, my name is Evan.

I LOVE the innovations on this Mastodon instance. It is truly inspiring, especially the group service you developed on groups.qoto.org!

I was wondering, I noticed that the domain public.group is around $2000 USD on Namecheap first year only, (a mere 13$/year after that !! !!) .

I personally would be willing to contribute 200 $ to the devs of Qoto to purchase that domain name and host a federated group service on it.

Having @mygroup@public.group as an available asset would be a huge service to the Fediverse! A dream come true!

Would anybody else be willing to contribute funds towards a fundraiser to make this happen?

Please let me know and I can set up a liberapay, get in contact with the owners to make this a reality!

High hopes for the future,

Evan
