What a race! #F1

Well done Lewis! 🍾

So gutted for George though. 😞

That's actually pretty startling. The UK has a Labour government which won only 34% of the votes, whilst 40% didn't vote. A government elected on just over 20% of the votes.

Finally: to those responding saying 'well, ACTUALLY, #Labour DID win because they've got the majority of seats in Westminster': no.

The Labour party won one third of the votes in an election in which under two thirds of the electorate voted. Fewer than ONE IN FIVE voters in Britain support this government. It has no mandate to do anything. If it tries, then, like Thatcher with the poll tax, it will find the difference between Westminster games and real politics.

To govern, you need consent.

I'm gonna keep posting this until one of you fucking boosts it

The Rwanda deportation scam had a fixed cost of £370M, plus an extra £20,000 per person, plus £12K in air fares, plus an extra £120M after 300 people were deported.

So it would cost well over £1M/refugee deported to Rwanda. Absolute madness (and clearly corrupt deals for cronies).

As it is, only 5 people were (illegally!) deported, at a cost of tens of millions per person.

Really, it'd have been beyond astonishing if Starmer *hadn't* cancelled the scheme.

It's finally happened: I have encountered a website that throws a "No ad-blockers!" blocker when I try to access it WITHOUT an ad blocker, and the only way I can get past the ad-blocker blocker is with an ad-blocker.

How is it that turning off things to back up to iCloud makes the backup size larger? And I basically can’t bring it down much below 4.7GB? What’s it backing up??

(I have seen many people suggest it’s messages. I don’t use messages much, but I’ve deleted them from iCloud anyway. Doesn’t seem to have helped.)

@simon_brooke @jesus I'm not sure I'd call a text representation of an abstract syntax tree a good language for human use. It's interesting, though, I'll give it that.

Comparing with asm, with some computer knowledge one can guess what MOV and JMP might do before reading the manual. Good luck trying to guess what the heck car or cdr do.

apps all becoming a kind of subscription software-as-a-service thing is all part of a 50-year-long quest for nominative determinism on the part of Bill Gates to turn computers into Toll Booths

I must have more ziplock bags than the average drug dealer, but I promise you it's all from buying Lego on the secondary market.

Has anyone I know done (or is doing) a distance learning degree in the UK? I'm considering doing one for fun but not sure where to start, as I've only done full-time on-campus to date. Probably masters level as bachelors and PhDs take too long.

I will be self-paying, part-time, fully online, 100% coursework with no exams because I do *much* better at coursework (in my BSc I got 80-100% in coursework vs 60-70% in exams, which cost me a first).
