Richard Bilton (as an aside, I remember him when he was a cub reporter on local/regional TV) sets out the debacle of HS2 in a summary narrative that still has the capacity (no pun intended -see conclusion of piece) to shock when it comes to the monumental waste of money, which could have been spent on a better/more pragmatic upgrade of the relevant railway lines....
Once again (as I posted a while ago) delays for review raised costs...
With a risk of this not being the right forum, i have a #matplotlib , #python question.
I am still trying to curve text on a polar projection.
I have succeded on that but the spacing between the characters is wrong.
To figure out how to get the width of each character I am trying to do it on a cartesian plot with TextPath and get_width, but it is not working so I am clearly misunderstanding something.
Can you see where or what I am doing wrong?
Tried a few local AI modal in #nextcloud using a #raspberryPi 5 and @mozilla LlamaFile
Seems mistral-7b-instruct-v0.2.Q4_0.llamafile is fastest, around 10 or 20 seconds.
Llama v3 at same quantization kept timing out.
Now that my talk’s out of the way, here’s a version of that demo on YouTube.
All of the sound you’re hearing is being made by a web browser.
Daft Punk’s Around the World, made using a MIDI sequencer and a web browser.
@dreid Definitely 2.x because Mailman 2 still exists. (You did say "use"; I don't think anyone is writing new code in Python 2 any more.)
Have I reached the Douglas Adams Inflection point (or is modern tech just a bit rubbish)? https://shkspr.mobi/blog/2022/09/have-i-reached-the-douglas-adams-inflection-point-or-is-modern-tech-just-a-bit-rubbish/
There really are people working on the fediverse.
It's just nobody came along with $12 million and said, "Here you go."
It was more like someone started doing some shit for free on their own time, alongside their real day job.
Competing with VC-funding at all is a feat in and of itself.
But it's also why Bluesky can become a social media site nearly overnight. They had $12 million and could afford to employ a small, capable team of devs to build the thing, and that's their entire job. With benefits.
DIY is competing with that. That will never not be amazing to me. I don't care if they "win." It's not about achieving some endgoal, to me, where the fedi is actually the "only social media out there."
It's that the fedi is in the running at all and it's basically doing it without playing the game that capitalism claims is necessary.
Prepared a spare #gotek with #flashfloppy for a workmate. He was gifted an #Amiga 500 and wants to test it...
@alexproe @ChrisMayLA6 Hydrogen is greenwashing—it's almost 100% produced by reforming methane (natural gas): electrolysis from water is ferociously expensive. It's also much lower energy density per unit volume than methane, diffuses through metal, as a cryogenic liquid it's murderously hard to handle and embrittles seals and metal, and it's explosive when mixed with air in almost any ratio. Locos powered by hydrogen are leaking fuel-air explosive bombs, and you want them in passenger stations?
I'll probably watch Penguin at some point, but I was just realizing that I don't care about Gotham City without Batman (or Batwoman.)
That's why I wasn't into Joker, Gotham, Pennyworth(?), Gotham Knights etc. etc. etc. Gotham City and its villains are just not that interesting on their own.
Exception: I did love the GCPD comic by Brubaker, Rucka, et al. That was two of the best comics writers at the time just having fun telling cop stories.
@revk just as a pub should have a webpage. The page page holds the useful information (opening times, menu) and embeds the fediverse feed in news. That way timely information flows through the fediverse - changes to times / menus / offers / special nights and so on. You can be informative and cross promote other organisations (runners / knitters / board gamers etc.) that use your pub - after all a pub is a social venture in it's own right!
@mcc remember gettign a piece of software and that was it? you just had the software and it did a thing and you didn't have to go "I wonder how much this is spying on me"
Homing pigeon missiles, dead trout swimming, butt breathing honored with Ig Nobel Prize

Hey gang, got a good buddy who has been out of work for over a year after a layoff from IBM. Worked in Firewall and IDS management there for 20 years there. Looking for a good resume consultant to help him spruce up his resume, and perhaps a good recruiter/career coach to help advise him on how to find his next gig. For normal fees of course.
Anyone got any good leads for folks who can help here? Thanks!!
@mcc email's a bit like democracy in that respect. it's the most broken communication system there is except for all the others.
