God stop trying to tell me about the problems with X11, I worked at SUN FUCKING MICROSYSTEMS

Today I learned that there are only three English cities with an electrical consumption greater than 200 megawatts: London, Manchester and Birmingham. By comparison, the people who want to build AI data centres here, which nobody asked for, want a supply of up to 1 gigawatt (1,000 megawatts) for each one. That’s how skewed this whole nonsense is.

20 years ago, Hayabusa (original flavour) collected a sample from asteroid Itokawa. Damaged by the largest solar flare in recorded history, the spacecraft still successfully returned the sample capsule to Earth in 2010. With no way to save the spacecraft, the JAXA team rotated Hayabusa so that its cameras could see Earth one final time before burning up in the atmosphere 🛰️.

It’s a "crisis" when immigrants "take jobs away", but "innovation" when machines do. Funny.

Multiple things can be true at once.

Nirav seems to be a genuinely good guy. I don't think he's racist or bigoted.

Framework is investing a tremendous amount of time, money, and effort into improving the Linux ecosystem and making the best hardware I have ever used (I love my Framework 13).

At the same time, Framework has also decided to actively fund projects that (at minimum) allow members to express white supremacist, anti-LGBTQ views on platforms (Discord) moderated by the projects.

Over the next 24 months, GitHub will be migrating its entire infrastructure to Azure. This infrastructure priority will result in delays to some feature development. This is the last step to kill the complete independence of Github and tighten up the grip on GitHub. thenewstack.io/github-will-pri

I wish UK politics could accept the fact that the days of voting blue Tory and Red Tory are waning.

The folks who supported your party had the same issue that always Labour voters had.

If you want to vote for a socialist party that will rebuild the social safety net and Tax the ultra rich, vote the Greens.

Labours not been a socialist party since the 90s. It's lost to capitalism, grieve, move on.

Also if we end up with lots of parties, you could like do an alliance.

The AI Bubble is also a data center bubble, and by extension a commercial/industrial real estate bubble.

When it pops, it’s not just going to affect tech workers. It’s also going to hit construction workers, electricians, plumbers, and pipefitters, to name a few.

And we’re suddenly going to have a shitload of giant data centers, many sitting on what used to be residential land — the 2020s answer to dead malls.

@kevin @mcc Just be glad you're not over here: is the option you need listed as "United Kingdom", "Great Britain", "Britain" or (variously) "England", "Wales", "Scotland", "Northern Ireland"?

So we remain vigilant & deeply grateful to our allies.

For Signal, Chat Control is an existential threat. If we were *forced* to choose between building surveillance into our services or keeping our integrity, we would choose integrity & leave the market. We hope it never comes to this. 7/
