@cstanhope I see that, and can turn on the advanced interface to do that, and that is how I would probably prefer to use the interface on desktop, but it doesn't work well for me on mobile, and it doesn't add it to that list of hashtags I see in my preferences... Not sure where that came from.
Thank you though.
@bwbeach I did just that (use it to learn Haskell) a couple years ago and it was extremely painful, but very educational. Unfortunately recently I've let life get in the way too much for adventofcode - I always try to catch up late at night during family vacation, but never quite make it 🤪
Last year, I did [#AdventOfCode](https://adventofcode.com) as an exercise to learn #rust. It's a sequence of daily programming puzzles in December. I'm thinking of doing it again this year and learning #haskell.
I don't try for speed, and I don't try to be the first to solve a problem. I take my time and solve each day's problem a day or two later. It would be nice to have people to chat with about solutions if anybody else is interested.
@Ktmacg79 yeah, it takes a minute to get used to. Take your time and explore a little and you'll get it no problem.
@Ktmacg79
Here's the image I was talking about that shows the different buttons on most mastodon interfaces.
@Ktmacg79 then to get to other servers, you might just click on Elizabeth's name there and you'll see her profile on another server. Or you might just go to newsie.social in a browser and (without logging in even) click the button near the bottom of the page that shows you all the toots going on. Most servers have that link, and it shows you what the fediverse looks like from that server's point of view.
@Ktmacg79 check out #newbies, one of the top things you may see there is from @Elizabeth_5 and it's a graphic of what I'm talking about. Your instance may have a different view of that hashtag than mine, though, so I'll steal the photo and post it here too.
@Ktmacg79 hello
Say whatever you want! Anybody browsing fosstodon's local feed will see it (the button with the people peeking out behind each other). Anybody who follows you will see it. Anybody who browses your profile will see it... And if you throw in a hashtag then folks on other servers following the hashtag might see it.
Try an #introduction if it strikes you - or just click there to find other interesting people.
@WPalant @jerry #fediverse anybody have some recommended instances that won't have (or are less likely to have) this problem?
It is tough to vet so many instances, but surely some folks find themselves in places that aren't like that.
I suspect large busy instances with solid codes of conduct get away from this issue a little... With so many people you just become a smaller target. Not a great solution but...
@charleslee it can be tough to find people on other servers at first... The global timeline is chaos but sometimes fun, the local timeline is much more chill. You can also search for hashtags like introductions, JavaScript, rust, or fediverse to find people talking about those things. Then you can look at the people talking about those things, and the people they follow, and go down some interesting rabbit holes.
@charleslee a collection of servers all communicating with each other using the ActivityPub protocol, generally in such a way as to let us humans discuss everyday things like what we had for breakfast or, "what is the fediverse?!"
Welcome!
You all know that feeling when you watch a movie for the 20th time plus and still notice things you never noticed before. Don't you? 🙈 #TheRockyHorrorPictureShow #TRHPS
@zash thanks for pointing this out.
Now... Do I have any publicly accessible services running on Debian testing?
@hackers_gifs you mean I'm not in your class?
