I used its rather grand appearance as a reference for this spooky little print many years ago. #print #linocut #tomb #graveyard #nunhead #mausoleum #spooky #horrorart #horror #wallart
Umi bozu is a #yokai sea spirit from #JapaneseFolklore. They appear on calm nights as a large humanoid shape emerging from the water, causing sudden turbulence and wild waves. Umi bozu will attempt to sink ships by demanding a barrel from the crew and then proceeding to scoop water into the boat. The only way to escape is by throwing them a bottomless barrel and quickly escaping while they are confused.

#TombTuesday. Having lunch today at old St Pancras churchyard. The tomb of John Soane is here, which may even be the inspiration for the iconic red telephone boxes. There’s also the Hardy Tree.
Based on a Mik’maq legend, in order to bring Summer to the North, the great spirit Glooscap must battle & outwit the giant Winter.

This ukiyo-e print by Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1843) is from the series 'Twenty-four Paragons of Filial Piety of Our Country' and depicts Zen-no-jo of Shinano being shown a vision in a large mirror by two demons and one of the Judges of Hell.

@Undertow The Hearing Trumpet by Leonora Carrington. A hidden gem in the sense that it’s not often included on #weirdfiction lists. Take a gentle stroll around the grounds of the world’s most surreal retirement home for old women.
In #JapaneseFolklore there is a belief that objects can develop a spirit or soul once they reach advanced age. This usually happens around their 100th birthday and it can be seen as a reward for their years of service. The objects are thereafter known as #tsukumogami, a type of #yokai which basically means 'tools that have acquired a spirit.' If they have been neglected or treated badly they may not be much fun to have around.

On the other site we did a thing each year called #WinterFolklore. We have masses of excellent films to share which contain elements of Winter Folklore; stories, myths, fairytales, creatures, customs, traditions and loads more goodies!

@yoreexplorers This was covered by my favourite podcast This Paranormal Life. Well worth a listen.

We hope everyone is doing well and excited for the #weekend!
Here are some #clusters of mushrooms that we have found on our #adventures! We tried a new side angle which has turned out great! (Was worth crouching in the mud over 😂)

Did you know that *every one* of the millions of #iNaturalist observations gets looked at by a volunteer identifier before it can reach "research grade", and get shared with the international biodiversity database #GBIF? Here's a new science paper listing some of the many important reasons why it's good for everyone with some taxonomic expertise, including scientists, to be identifiers on #iNaturalist. (I'm one of the many authors.) https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pbio.3001843 #biodiversity #taxonomy #CitizenScience
The British Geological Survey Core Store. The BGS is a national data repository for Earth Science, which also includes rocks! From rocks collected by Darwin on the Beagle Voyage, to suites of rock that define the Geological formations of the UK, to hundreds of km of cores from boreholes. This place is astonishing.
