The British Geological Survey Core Store. The BGS is a national data repository for Earth Science, which also includes rocks! From rocks collected by Darwin on the Beagle Voyage, to suites of rock that define the Geological formations of the UK, to hundreds of km of cores from boreholes. This place is astonishing.

In #JapaneseFolklore kappa are goblin-like water demons. Their powers are linked to a bowl-shaped dip filled with water on top of their heads. If this water spills they lose power. Considering these #yokai can be very viscous, this is handy to know. If you need to escape from a kappa stand & bow deeply. Out of politeness the kappa will bow in return, causing the water on top of their head to spill. This will leave them powerless & allow you to escape. Terrarium photos. ~One month apart (15th Oct vs today, 13th Nov). So pleased with the progress! There’s more work to be done, but I’m on to planning my next one now. #mossyMoment #houseplants #terrarium #terrariums #forestfloor #tropicalplants #nature
Seeing recent activity on #terrarium made my day. Here’s a photo of my aqua terrarium. It’s 12 months and counting and in desperate need of a spruce up. The cryptocoryne is healthy but hasn’t grown much. Moss is in need of a trim or replacement; water needs refreshing; lava rock needs a scrub. Very much a warts and all photo.
My little project @dailymedievaldeath so far attracted more than 20 followers. If you like daily #otd toots with a picture about #medievaldeath, feel free to share and/or follow! #medieval @histodons
So many people are having a bad first experience with Mastodon because they're using the official app which is lacking features, doesn't allow image uploads randomly, has random slowness, and doesn't give you easy access to the two most active feeds where you can find people (Local and Federated).
Please switch to Metatext, Tusky, or Tooot for a better mobile experience (or even use a browser).
Out of the >15k users that joined this week, over 11k are on the official apps.
Oak Mazegill. This one is anomalous as it has the 'maze' on both upper and lower surfaces of the bracket. #fungi #Sporespondence
I take many more pictures than I post here. All pics are on my "Smugmug" site https://scotfot.smugmug.com/Latest-images/2022-July-December/
From this morning’s walk behind Wanstead rugby club, killing time while son was training. Can anyone recommend a good UK fungi field guide to aid identification? #fungi #sporespondence
This pushed the limits of my phone so photo isn’t great, but think I got some #slimemould on this morning’s walk.
