I was thinking about our 1000 character limit rule regarding required CW.

I want to propose an exception to this rule. It should only apply to original posts. Replies should be exempt of this rule (or at least have a much higher limit like 3,000).

The reason for this is replies do not show in federated timeline, local timeline, or even home for anyone except the person specifically being replied to. Therefore the consequence of "blowing up" the timeline of bystanders no longer applies and thus the exception should be reasonable.

Thoughts?

@freemo @arteteco @absolutus @hashtaggrammar Sounds good to me. Most replies get CWed by default, so, it'll only really change for people who actually want to un CW it.

@freemo
Idk, personally on mastalab and on the web UI I have to turn off replies if I don't want to see them, otherwise they'll appear in the home timeline. I like to read them, but I would avoid users posting 3k chars replies, so I'd enforce the 1k limit for replies too. Anyway, once you are in a conversation is not a problem to just press CW for the other person.

Are you sure? I have replies turned on in my home feed and on the web I have never once seen a reply that I wasnt tagged to.

What I do see (and what you may be thinking of) is original posts that tag a person but not done as a reply. Sometimes (often) people make mistakes and tag someone and write a response intended as a reply but didnt actually click the reply button. In which case it will show up. But generally if its a legitimate reply it shouldnt show up in your home unless you are tagger. At least on the webui, i cant speak for other apps.

@freemo @arteteco @absolutus @hashtaggrammar I'm typically on using the web client, both at home and at work. I have and use Mastalab, but it's more supplementary to the browser/web client.

On the web client, I don't see replies unless I'm tagged, even if I'm following both parties.

@Surasanji Thank you for confirming that, I thought so.

I think what arteco is seeing is a mistake i have seen others make and myself. that is, they mean to reply but accidentally post it as an original post. So when you read it you think you are reading a reply but if you click on the post you will see there is no earlier discussion chain.

Its just an anomaly.

@freemo @arteteco @absolutus @hashtaggrammar It's important to note I am also unable to confirm (Because I am too lazy tot check) that this is ALSO the case on Mastalab.
