@design_RG Dude there are some pretty disgusting and oppressive instances on that list... some of the worst actors in the fediverse are on there... scholar.social, really
Virtually every one of those instances have been oppressive to instances with opposing viewpoints to their own and usually spread disgusting lies about any instance that doesnt fit their ideals..
Its a list of fanaticism mostly (a few instances on there are ok).
boo
@design_RG Freely reporting isnt what I have issue with.. If your going to promote something and give it a voice you should take some care in what you promote.
There are countless really concerning violations about that site that doesnt deserve to give it a voice..
1) that host highly oppressive instances as I mentioned
2) they promote a block list widely known to mischaracterize and lie about the explanations as to why instances are added to the list
Promoting content so irresponsibly is concerning to say the least.
Your welcome. It really isnt like Rob to be so reckless and supporting people and sites that are explicitly exploiting and harming others like that.
> It really isnt like Rob to be so reckless and supporting people and sites that are explicitly exploiting and harming others like that.
Yes, of course, I don't see what you are referring to, of course, other than them having an extensive and well explained block list.
Which includes this site, unfortunately.
I am moving my personal Blog announcements to different places for that very reason.
Regarding the instances site mentioned, you are welcome to explain and make any points you like, as is Oxie too. I meant no disrespect and am listening. Thank you.
The concern isnt so much about explaining it. By giving a site like this a voice, it is free advertisement. Especially when the top post is praising them. Most people will never dig in the replies far enough to understand.
It would be like you promoting GAB as an awesome webside and then thinking people discussing it in the comments would balance out any harm that might do.. Dont get me wrong you are free to voice your opinion. but to show support for something that has such a horrible reputation ultimately looks bad on you and hurts the reputation of everyone associated with the post, including the server.
As we said when we blocked it. Should your moderation policies change such that harassment of the form we expiernced en masse would be moderated you only need let us know and we would be happy to remove the silence.
So far I have heard no such indication of any change in policy. Only repeated justification (and even lies) about what happened at the time.
If that has changed and the server has reformed its moderation policies in that regard I would be more than happy to remove the silence.
Is that the case?
As a reminder, as we stated at the time of the block, and as we state on our public block list. The views of the spinster server in no way have any effect on our decision to silence it.
The incident was the result of en mass harassment over multiple days. Dozens of users (and one in particular) explicitly avoiding personal mutes by repeatedly opening up new threads over and over again in order to harass myself and others.
Our first line of defense was a personal mute, that was circumvented, the next line of defense was a 24 hour silence on the instance, it continued past that, At that point we engaged with the moderators on spinster for over 24 hours to see a resolution, none was given.
We are under no obligation to have to be bombarded en mass by users in an attempt to harass our users.
As was stated multiple times this had nothing to do with your ideologies or opinions and unless there is some protection regarding harassment your instance will remain silenced.
LOL
Anyway As I said, we will happily unsilence spinster once your moderation policies come in compliance with US law and there is some guarantee against a repeat of the events that originally got you blocked.
If that time comes you only need to let us know and we will happily unblock you.
i think you misunderstand **why** spinster is blocked. It has absolutely nothign to do with their opinions.
They were silenced some time ago when a gang of over a dozen users began systematically harassing QOTO users (primarily moderators at the time, and primarily me) by creating hundreds of threads and tagging us with threats and personal insults.
We asked multiple times to be left alone and engaged in personal mutes for the first 24 hours but it persisted over days and the personal mutes were circumvented by opening new threads or tagging from new accounts.
Eventually we had no choice but to silence the whole server. we even spent 24 hours talking to the moderators first saying we didnt want to silence them but they would have to fix the harassment and mute circumvention first, but nothing ever came of it.
Ultimately they were silenced due to what was effectively massive spam/harassment, their views play no part in the silence.
Also note its a silence, not a block. Users are still perfectly capable of following anyone from spinster they wish from QOTO.
As I stated at the time of the silence, if we are given some assurance the issue has been fixed then I would be more than happy to remove the silence.
the issue is Alex and spinster have repeatedly made no apologies for how they handled the situation, and have outright lied about how the incident developed countless times. This leads me to believe that the issue remains unresolved and should the same incident crop up again the moderator team there would again, do nothing to resolve the issue.
So all I need to see is some indication the moderation team has backtracked on their stance, admits to the error on their part, and ensures publicly that should a repeat would take place they would step in to handle it. Then I'd be more than happy to remove the silence. I just havent seen that.
thanks.
Like I said, all we need to hear is that the moderators dont support what happened and in the future would actively work to prevent future occurrences and the silence will be lifted.
Honestly, its not a very big ask, and it is the only thing we stipulated since the incident happened.
LOL ohhhhh the irony, spinster has you blocked? So much for Alex's high horse.
Well they are basically a "Feminist TERF" instance.. in other words they have a unique ideology that they describe as feminism (though generally mainstream feminists reject them) with a clear anti-trans anti-porn view.
So while I dont think I would describe spinster as racist, perse, most would probably label spinster as a server that is sexist (though spinster themselves would likely label themselves as anti-sexist).
I'm not sure if they take any stance on nazism itself or racists... that doesnt seem to be a topic they discuss too often.
@freemo I did not vet the list instances, but liked the idea of having ANOTHER place for people to find interesting ones.
This is in addition to Eugen's nice and well known https://joinmastodon.org/
...and another less functional, similar site : https://instances.social/
Freely reporting here, sir, the visitors are welcome to choose or reject whichever they like.
