Classical cyberpunk dystopia is modern utopia (can you even call it that?). Today's cyberpunk is tomorrow's. Of course not all details will transpire and those that do may not translate well (in terms of imagination). But ultimately, the future will just like how you described. Looking at historical trends leads one to assume such a outcome. The reasons (as many as there are) for such should be clear to see after enough reflection.
@lucifargundam when has the world not been a dystopia? I think for like 15 minutes in 1988 once.

@freemo i still am confused/amused by how accurate transmetropolitan feels sometimes.
the only thing missing today is some technology and aliens and we are set!
@bonifartius give it time, the aliens are coming, they are just waiting for society to fall apart a bit more.
