When you hear the word "graph" what do you think of?

@servant_of_the_anime_avatars Set builder notation, while neccesary and something I use often, always makes me go cross eyed, even when it conveys simple sets.

@freemo Yeah, it is also written in the "wrong" direction, if you read it from left to right first you use the terms and only after that you say what they actually are...

@servant_of_the_anime_avatars yea that clearly doesnt help. But I think they were borrowing from the "feel" of conditional probabilities which uses a similar looking format with a similar flow to it... but not a good move IMO

@servant_of_the_anime_avatars NVM I see what you are saying.. YOUR example is backwards.. and yea it is.. though i do think the standard way of doing it feels backwards too.

Normally you have some set of things on the left of | and then some "filter" or conditions for inclusion on the right.. which still makes me go dizzy sometimes but not as bad as your bastardized form :)

@servant_of_the_anime_avatars @freemo is this some topology homeomorphic thing which sprains the brain? like computational linguistics or something

topology is the Italian study of mice or the French study of moles, homeomorphic is faggot-shaped, cohomology is something which makes me blush and clopens my mind :-(
@wikifarms @freemo It is just the standard definition of a graph in Analysis, it is hardly much more then the lines you look at in calculus. Seriously, it can get *much worse*.

@freemo
I just think of the root word from greek meaning "to draw" or something

@torresjrjr So would a drawing of a basket of fruit be a graph in your mind?

@freemo @torresjrjr
That do is a graph.
I think if you give an x and y axis to any image it becomes a graph

@mur2501

Strictly speaking a graph is defined as:

> a diagram showing the relation between variable quantities, typically of two variables, each measured along one of a pair of axes at right angles.

@torresjrjr

@freemo @mur2501

> So would a drawing of a basket of fruit be a graph in your mind?

No. But context matters.

@freemo it ultimately depends on context but I'd rather be more specific and use "chart" or "plot" instead of graph for the meaning of a non-mathematical graph
