At some point in the collective minds of people we stopped understanding the difference between attacking ideas, vs attacking the people who hold those ideas. People assume if you hate an idea someone holds by extension you hate the person. If you think an idea is idiotic then you must think people who hold the idea are idiots.
We need to get back to the place where people dont take personally when ideas are attacked.
@freemo Sometimes a time delay is the best way to deal with this. Social media gives people information very quickly so if it illicits an emotional reaction, that’s what gets typed in response. I know I’ve been guilty of that and it’s something I’m trying to work on.
It’s been difficult in the UK with the riots. Tensions have been high and I haven’t felt so emotional online for a while. I blocked the person I have very strong disagreements with, I don’t know how I’d get along with them given their view point.
I agree with your sentiment though, however it’s easier said than done.
@inpc while agree a time delay is helpful i dont think it describes the issue, and its not a social media thing either.
People talk face to face and used to be civil despite no time delay.
The problem is fewer people seem to be developi g these traits as time goes on
Probably ;)
