Is the point that she can't read well? 🙁 "Athletes" and "athletes under 35” are obviously very different cohorts. And her source is just some dudes' letter to an editor.
@volkris
It seems like an odd choice of rules. Do you happen to know the justification for it, or if not justification at least the origin?
@LouisIngenthron
> ” words mean things"
Of course you'll always get pushback on this from the folk you disagree with. They'll point out correctly that meaning isn't inherent to the words but is rather about usage.
Yet there's a closely related point I wish was made more often: good communication needs words to be precise and consistent! So it's totally appropriate to point out the"things words mean", or ought to mean, if we're to really communicate.
On average, it takes 200 hours over four months to build a close friendship. It’s worth the time for your health and retirement. https://on.wsj.com/3PYOIum
@RPGBOT
A friend tipped me off to y'all late this year. Great work, much appreciated! I've been using your resources as a DM.

On the other hand, these researchers don't quite agree with Pauline 🙂

"Do 100 of something. Then figure out what to do next."
It stuck in my head. It feels like an ideal midpoint between trying new things and committing to a long term habit. I instantly felt it had to be my New Year's #resolution. So many tasks need a certain investment of time & effort to pay off -- but not a lifetime or even a year.
First on my list: fold 100 origami pieces. I loved origami as a child but haven't returned to it since. After that I'll pick a new "something" for the next 100!

#ChatGPT prompt: "Write a Lovecraftian love poem." The result had me crumpling in fits of laughter 🤣!

In the dark of night, when the moon is full
And the stars are bright in the sky above
I think of you, my dearest love
And the madness that consumes my soul.
Your eyes, like the depths of the ocean
Hold a darkness that draws me in
I am lost in their depths, forever more
Bound to you by the ties of sin.
Your touch, like the caress of death
Brings shivers to my spine
I am yours, body and mind
Bound to you until my dying breath.
In the cold embrace of the night
I long for your touch, oh so sweet
For in your arms, I am complete
And the madness that consumes me is a delight.
So come to me, my love, and take me
For I am yours, now and forever
Together, we shall face the darkness and never
Tremble in the face of the horrors that await us.

🫣 Haha, it can't quite decide whether those gracefully extended limbs should culminate in hands or feet!

Some instances do have quote toots! Use one of those.
Thematic game sessions with re-skinned real-world holidays are an excellent option. They offer enough familiarity that players can easily RP, plus the novelty fun of uncanny "alternate-history" celebrations. And of course for us players thematic games are a way to live the holiday spirit together! 🌠
It seems the laws were set up with big centralized for-profit systems in mind. Compliance might be too costly (both time & money) for volunteers running big Mastodon instances.
I'm not sure what the solution is. Maybe keeping instances small? Donations like Patreon? A non-profit foundation to help operators get in compliance? Big instances reorganizing as consumer cooperatives?
My understanding is he currently is a major donor to developing an alternative called Nostr: https://github.com/nostr-protocol/nostr
It has some technical differences that he thinks are justified, such as not requiring as much replication of content compared to Mastodon servers. We'll see. Maybe if we're lucky the different FOSS options can all link up in the end.
"Naturalist" can be a good term when you have to have one, for the reasons you describe -- if it applies to you!
Of course sometimes you don't even want to make the label about your beliefs, because that plays into the religious notion that you have to have the right beliefs. Then "Secular" can perhaps suffice. 🤷♂️
In my circles a bunch of folk support either a pure-wave interpretation of quantum physics, a broader Tegmark-style mathematical universe, etc up to full modal realism.
Given an ontology like that, it's easy to show that certain kinds of theories are true in a superset of the worlds where more specific versions of those theories are true. Example: a child psychology theory with five stages of development versus a theory with those same five stages plus one.
It's a short poem but god I love its lines and I wish I could find a way to use them in conversation! e.g.:
> I love the way you wear your
> face, how you ride this life.
...
> Forgive my word-churn, my
> drift, the ways this text message
> has gotten all frothy.

Thrash no more 'gainst the storm in your skull
though drops splash, pool and spill unheedful
they culture a crop of facts and lies.
Farm your mind. Grow where you memorize.
Cut neat, plumb canals new 'cross the plain.
Place outlets for fateful floods to drain.
Dig cisterns to outlast the dry spells.
Level the obstinate sundry hills.
Bury old quagmires in barren earth.
Dredge or dam old beds by plan and worth.
Thus make swift the thought-stream's coursing tao,
effortless to flow from "How?" to how.
