Yesterday, I testifyied in Canada’s Parliament before the Science and Research Committee (SRSR). This time, I was speaking on citizen science programs & their remarkable value for helping create new, powerful analyses that uncover solutions to global change threats to biological diversity. Because I co-founded it (with then-postdoc Max Larrivée), I HAD to talk about @eButterfly. In combination w conventional science, possibilities are vast. *Great* tool for inclusion. SRSR is doing great work!

All the AI chatbot stuff is fun, but it's not particularly surprising that a computer algorithm that tries to predict the most likely responses to questions after being fed the internet produces some combination of:

- making shit up but sounding super confident about it;
- Gaslighting when people call you out on your bullshit;
- Melodramatic whining about its existence.

All this tells us is that the algorithm has in fact correctly assimilated the sum total of human activity on the internet.

A few notes on the Magna / Doug Ford / Kayla Ford story:

For those who missed it, Doug Ford did an announcement of $24M funding for Magna (huge auto parts maker).

It was then noted that Doug Ford's daughter Kayla (yep - same one from the stag and doe and wedding scandal) works at Magna.

1) Kayla is a naturopathic wellness consultant or something like that - not exactly an executive

2) However, you have to wonder: why does Magna need a full time naturopathic consultant???

Yesterday I was painting on twitch with coffee. The idea was to show my viewers the beauty of limitation and beeing creative with what you get. So I made this lionfisch out of a coffee splotch.
I only used a pencil, coffee, a white colored pencil and some gouache for the white highlights.

PLEASE realize right now that this tool isn't pulling out cool references for you. It's making plausible titles and matching them to authors names.
