My latest: For the past few years, Antarctic sea ice has been in rapid decline. And now there are worrying indications that its loss will speed melt of the West Antarctic ice sheet, and slow the ocean's carbon-absorbing overturning circulation.

And this will happen, unfortunately, no matter where emissions go from here. (Though more emissions *will* make it worse in the long run!)

Same thing goes for Canada. Boggles the mind that in the 2020s we don't have frequent high-speed electric rail from #Quebec City to #Windsor. 50% of Canada's population is in the red zone below. People fly and drive instead. Such low-hanging fruit, but no government grasps it.

In Europe, I go everywhere by passenger rail, on high-speed electric trains. In Canada and the US, I'm stuck on slow, late diesel trains. I explore this sad situation—and offer a little hope for the future—in my latest Straphanger dispatch on Substack
