At the rural school district I last worked at, we had 1500 students, of whom 1,000 were free lunch and 500 were not. The cost of personnel (an entire department!), computers, and software for vetting students to make sure those 500 didn't get free lunch cost more than the cost of simply feeding them, already.

I started Overcast ten years ago in large part because I was afraid of Stitcher taking over the market with its proprietary walled garden (which was even more walled at the time, and was gaining significant traction).

I wanted to ensure that the open world of podcasting survived and thrived, even when faced with strong proprietary threats.

The names and players have changed since then, and the battle continues, but open podcasting remains dominant and healthy today.

As part of a wave of layoffs, I got laid off from my backend development job last month as the company's financials I was working with have been steadily decreasing. I applied for another job shortly after, and after a month of interviews and an honestly great response from their team, at the last minute, they told me that they were focusing their hiring efforts away from the US and towards Singapore. With Calckey donations, I don't have enough money to pay for rent or groceries. Here's what people on the outside looking in, don't get, Mastodon isn't an alternative to other social media, it is its own thing entirely.

That's what struck me about it, and why I'm still there. People on Mastodon didn't care how many people were on it or if their favorite celebrity or journalist was here. They want to build communities with real people.

All these kinds of articles are basically stating, "This wasn't for me, therefore these things are failures." How absolutely ridiculous.

Maybe the internet being mostly five corporate websites for the past 15 years was a really bad idea.
