"the secret scientists don't want you to know!!" Dude have you ever met a single scientist? My scientist friends are desperate for me to know about the changing mating habits of Brown marmorated stink bugs. They're screaming at the top of their lungs to tell you EVERYTHING.

A poem celebrating those easily overlooked but wonderfully common moments of goodwill that pass between us.

Small Kindnesses
By Danusha Laméris

I’ve been thinking about the way, when you walk
down a crowded aisle, people pull in their legs
to let you by. Or how strangers still say “bless you”
when someone sneezes, a leftover
from the Bubonic plague. “Don’t die,” we are saying.
And sometimes, when you spill lemons
from your grocery bag, someone else will help you
pick them up. Mostly, we don’t want to harm each other.
We want to be handed our cup of coffee hot,
and to say thank you to the person handing it. To smile
at them and for them to smile back. For the waitress
to call us honey when she sets down the bowl of clam chowder,
and for the driver in the red pick-up truck to let us pass.
We have so little of each other, now. So far
from tribe and fire. Only these brief moments of exchange.
What if they are the true dwelling of the holy, these
fleeting temples we make together when we say, “Here,
have my seat,” “Go ahead — you first,” “I like your hat.”

Efforts to save the endangered Fender’s blue butterfly have resulted in quadrupling the population as well as helping save its host plant, the Kincaid’s lupine, from a similar fate!

"[T]he species is slated to be downlisted from endangered to threatened. If this status change is finalized, as is expected to happen this year, Fender’s blue will become only the second insect to have recovered in the history of the Endangered Species Act." In PNAS, we theoretically and empirically dissect the concept of "pandemic fatigue": pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.2201

While WHO feared that "pandemic fatigue" would lead to disregard of health advice, we show that fatigue had effects far beyond the health domain.

Fatigue fueled mistrust, protest & conspiracy beliefs.

A pandemic is far more than a health crisis and social science expertise needs to be central in pandemic management.

GPT-3 can imitate Daniel Dennett without parroting exact phrases.

"Digi-Dan is thus more sophisticated than the objector supposes. Somehow, it creates textual outputs that Dennett experts often mistake for Dennett's own writing without parroting Dennett's exact words. It can synthesize new strings of Dennett-like prose."

Tempting to think it has learned an implicit 'Dennett-Space' and can now interpolate.

Amazing. In an experiment, scientists observed a single-celled alga evolve into a multi-cell organism, in real time. They introduced a predator into the environment and the transition followed over the course of about a year.

Major Twitter influencers are pushing a supposed replacement called Post. It may be great (I'm not allowed to use it so far) but it's yet another proprietary, closed (in terms of interoperability), centralized social network.

Great for the A list and vCs. Not great for me.

Tax Preparers Sell You Out to Facebook

Major tax filing services such as H&R Block, TaxAct, and TaxSlayer have been quietly transmitting sensitive financial information to Facebook when Americans file their taxes online, The Markup has learned. - theverge.com/2022/11/22/234718

Here is a comparison between JWST’s near-infrared (left) and mid-infrared views (right).

In the image taken with JWST’s Mid-infrared Instrument (MIRI), the hot stars fade, and the cooler gas and dust glow. We can see deeper into the nebula, where, points of light indicate embedded still-forming protostars. Soot-like hydrocarbon dust glows, shown here in blue and purple. (6/)

This [Behind the Code](youtube.com/playlist?list=PLn5) series examines hit detection, AI, glitches, and many more topics in the context of classic NES game code. It looks at The Legend of Zelda, Megaman, Contra, SuperMario Brothers, and many others.

It is perfect nerd bait for me-- perhaps some of you are similarly unusual and will enjoy it.

"[A] fresh look at a 3700-year-old clay tablet suggests that Babylonian mathematicians not only developed the first trig table, beating the Greeks to the punch by more than 1000 years, but that they also figured out an entirely new way to look at the subject. However, other experts on the clay tablet, known as Plimpton 322 (P322), say the new work is speculative at best." ([Source](science.org/content/article/an) )

Not recent, but interesting.

Those same members of Congress attempted to block an SEC inquiry into FTX and other crypto companies.
