I see a lot of people talking about how Mastodon "Feels like the Internet I remember from 20 years ago."
That's no accident. That's Federation. That's UseNet, IRC, Email, Message Boards, etc. What do they all have in common?
Federation: Users congregating around watering holes of common interest, but still being a part of a larger whole.
THIS IS HOW THE INTERNET WAS DESIGNED TO BE. And I am HERE for it.

• NHS Hospital Canteen: ‘Single Tuna sarnie’ costing £3.00 for nurses, paid for out of their own wage
• Houses of Parliament: ‘Rum banana tarte tatin with rum and raisin ice cream’ for the princely sum of £2.37 for MPs, paid for by you the taxpayer
Nurses’ fight is our fight.

@jonreed Love it, but the line before last and the first has the wrong meter and it throws it off. May I suggest the following variant:
There once was a man called Musk,
Who hollowed the bird to a husk,
We migrated and flew,
To friends old and new,
And now we are fans of the tusk
News on potential collapse of Twitter
Until now I hadn’t appreciated that were very serious structural problems at Twitter. I thought Elon would make it messy, but it would robustly continue. This below, however, is starting to make me much more concerned.
I came across to Mastodon out of curiosity, fun, sense of opportunity & respect for the concept. Now I’m thinking it’s a vital hedge for us all against serious Twitter risks, including collapse.
Another quick PSA for the newcomers:
There is no Mastodon.
As in, there is no entity out there called Mastodon that needs to "get it together" or "make things easier."
Every server is a unique collection of hardware and software operated by a unique team of (usually) volunteer humans funded by (usually) donations.
Some days will be smoother than others. We new folks have flooded the network. Cut the volunteers some slack. Better yet, offer support.
Kwarteng and blame
Of course, in the first interview he gives since the dangerous farce of his time in office, Kwarteng pins blame onto Truss and claims he tried to warn her. He also says Hunt shouldn’t blame him or Truss for the government’s current problems. Presumably they shouldn’t blame their shared Brexit ideology either.
In fact, why take any responsibility for anything at all?
Arrogantly adamant that they deserve power, whatever price the rest of us have to pay for it.

Rewatching this video of Matt Hancock makes me so angry.
He tells the select committee "There's no evidence that a shortage of PPE provision led to anybody dying of covid."
How dare he!

Did you know that if you capitalize each word in a multi-word hashtag, #ScreenReaders can read them as words, but if you leave them lowercase, they can't? Well, now you know! So, for #accessibility, please capitalize words when there's more than one in a hashtag.
For all it's advantages and faults, #Mastodon was not built to be a *new* Twitter. It was built to be *not* Twitter.
That distinction is important.
Back on the bird site, there was too much going on. I felt like I didn't have anything to add since it had all been said twenty times before I opened my mouth. It's a little quieter here and suddenly my mind has space to think.
There's a Rumi poem that's kinda like that, but I can't find it again. Something about how he feels so loud while writing, but when people are there he is very quiet and says nothing at all
UK Politics; Industrial action
Many nurses simply cannot afford to eat - or feed their families - on the wages they receive
What else can they do but strike?
You can’t eat claps

This is your daily reminder that you have millions of friends and allies in the EU.
Also, Mastodon too has its share of trolls, sock puppets, shills, and other discourse parasites. They have no right to your attention.
Remember to #ShrugAndBlock to keep the site safe and supportive. Reports seem to make more sense here than on the bird site, so do make the effort if and when you have the energy.
