This is also why Black people get so upset when the police shoot someone and say "He was armed! His gun was found at the scene!"
Being armed is not supposed to be a crime in this gun obsessed country. If being stopped by police while armed got you shot, then white men would be shot at the highest rate. But that's not what we see. We see the opposite.
The second amendment is not a real right, because of the way our system of justice selectively enforces it. It's the *white* to bear arms.
People like to act like “this was all so long ago” and I’m just sitting here like…my Grandma is still with us and she’s 93. Some of us still have living relatives who lived through this nightmare.
Don’t let yourself think of it as some long, bygone era that could never happen again.
Hesitation, appeasement, and living in denial let it happen the first time.

Just rename it the State of Fascism.
(And BTW, WaPost, tenure is not a "perk".)
Florida bills would ban gender studies, transgender pronouns, tenure perks https://www.washingtonpost.com/education/2023/03/05/florida-bills-would-ban-gender-studies-transgender-pronouns-tenure-perks/
Growing up, I had three sisters. One of them was a quiet child, often angry or sullen and sometimes cruel.
One day that person went away.
And then I had a brother.
He was cheerful and warm, finally comfortable in a body he'd wanted his entire life.
Conservatives want to eradicate my brother. I'm here to say that's not going to happen.
@marcoarment @stern @lorihc Apple's HIGs have always been on the top. Unfortunately, I gave my copy of the original Macintosh HIGs away to a fellow psychology student. It covered so many important basic concepts which never become irrelevant
I’ve always thought my BA (technically an Arts Baccalaureate, or AB, but everyone thinks that’s an Associate’s degree, so for clarity I say BA) was extremely useful in my career as a software engineer/programmer and as an engineering manager, but the new section on Writing in the HIG and this article in the New Yorker (https://apple.news/AyH8_64NyRp-rhivNpukO_A) have me feeling pretty good about my choices.
Loved the Apple HIG "Writing" guide: https://developer.apple.com/design/human-interface-guidelines/foundations/writing/

Anyone who writes text for UIs should read that.
And it linked to something even better, Apple's guide to inclusive writing, that *everyone* should read: https://support.apple.com/guide/applestyleguide/intro-apdcb2a65d68/web
The craft of making great apps depends SO MUCH on good writing.
I absolutely love that @marcoarment added a little game to the @overcastfm Apple Watch app while you wait for an episode to transfer over to the watch. Heckin’ delightful!
In today's Design Diary I talk about my philosophy for building Accessibility into my apps. “Try, then Listen". It is sometimes difficult to know how best to build accommodations into our apps, so we try what we think best, then listen when users react...repeating as needed to get the best result.
Specifically I discuss how my mental model for why users would have their Dynamic Type size set to large was incomplete and thus I was overshooting in my reaction to it.

If you can spare a few dollars for Gayla and Davin, please do. They’re right on the edge of finally having a bit of security in their lives in the midst of a very long slog of chronic illness and displacement. https://www.gofundme.com/f/gayla-and-davin-a-home
What is the little box with the number in it supposed to do in IceCubes? For me it keeps changing values at the same time my scroll position is randomly hopping around—usually as I’m reading a post. I can almost never find that post after the leap. It’s like I’m randomly time traveling. Tapping it just gives me more of the same.
Cyclists are now the single largest mode of travel during peak times in London, according to a new report.
They represent 40% of traffic during peak hours and 27% of traffic throughout the day.
Since 1999, the number of motorists has dropped 64% and the number of cyclists has increased 386%.

@IceCubesApp Is it possible to customize what goes in the secondary column on iPad/Mac? I’d rather have a specific List than Notifications.
🌟 Near my house, there's an apartment building with a courtyard. Big deal, right? But if you walk up the steps a little bit, there's something about this courtyard that you might find really truly wonderful… https://cabel.com/2023/02/25/the-courtyard/
“All the bicyclists are booing [Brown] and he is really pissed. You could tell he's really pissed. And he walks off the little stage they have and apparently he tells the cops, ‘Shut it down.’ And so they tried and they couldn't because there was just too many cyclists and everybody just went in every direction” https://www.kqed.org/news/11941576/the-night-that-changed-san-francisco-cycling-forever
I'd started listening to Street Disciples: Politics, Power, and the Rise of Hip-Hop (https://overcast.fm/+sVxCaeeq0) and queued all the episodes so far into a weekend playlist when a friend recommended Fight the Power: How Hip Hop Changed the World (https://youtu.be/8kVPrmBNYOI). Now watching that on PBS. Both are so good!
Now posting @lorihc@mastodon.social. Find me there!
