Corporations want to bring back child labor, and some states are on board.

Arkansas: 9 year-olds can now be hired to work without parental ok.
Iowa: 14 year-olds could soon work in industrial freezers, meat coolers, and mines.
Ohio: kids may soon work year-round until 9pm

An underrated downside to filling so much of our country with non walkable suburban hellsprawl is that many drivers are totally inept driving in downtowns and are trained to do things like "speed up to beat the light" (because in sprawl stroads have painful minutes-long cycles) or roll through stop signs that present mortal danger in pedestrian -heavy areas

Did you know the city of San Francisco has a city-run darkroom and photo center? We also have classes here. For $30, I’m doing a 3-4 hour into to BW developing class. (Register for classes on SF recs and parks website. Runs on a winter / spring schedule. Classes usually book out within the hour of class registration)

Guv. Sarah Hucksterbee Sanders signed a law in Arkansas that makes child labor easier for employers to get away with. And now we have the following, from the WaPo:
"A bill advancing in Iowa would allow 14- and 15-year-olds to work certain jobs in meatpacking plants and would shield businesses from civil liability if a youth worker is sickened, injured or killed on the job."
Look at that last sentence again.

Jupes just texted me because a girl was having a seizure in their class. I’ve worked in special-ed classrooms where we had kiddos who seized regularly (experience that came in handy later when my first baby had a few as well), and anyway I’d forgotten how scary it can feel if you aren’t used to seeing them. Jupes didn’t panic, I’m so proud of them. Their classmate is doing fine now. Here’s a guide to what to do if you’re suddenly in that position, it’s great info to have: cdc.gov/epilepsy/about/first-a

Karl Mitchell was riding his cargo bike with his 11-year-old son in the front bucket, when he got t-boned by a car

He and his son were thankfully not seriously injured

He wrote an excellent piece about how it happened and how his city's street policies need to change: riverfronttimes.com/news/a-st-

This is such a weird framing. M1 at most companies is equivalent to an IC4, not a 6+. Some companies have rules about M1s not managing IC5+ because those folks are more senior than the manager. So “down ranking” does not seem like the right term. And the article emphasizes it by making it sound like working alongside someone you’d previously managed was some kind of humiliation. It happens all the time when managers want to be ICs again.

@alyssa If you’re a programmer and don’t want to use a language implemented by trans people, your best bet is to take a compilers course and write one yourself.

Scrolling through your Mastodon timeline is such a wild ride.

-Post about astrophysicist that has made a scientific breakthrough.
-Post complaining about cars.
-Six nature photos in a row.
-Post officially declaring war on cars. Apparently Mastodon has amassed an anti-car army. I enlist.
-Picture of a cartoon dragon with the caption "Hornyposting time!". To my dismay, I am seeing it because it was boosted by the previously mentioned astrophysicist.

Nothing but twists and turns at every turn.

My paternal grandmother was born in Berlin, Germany in 1900. She was, as was her whole family, Jewish. She was smart and driven. Had her own dressmaking shop by the time she was 25. But, the handwriting was on the wall, and she left home for New York in 1925. She learned English and worked as a dressmaker until she got married to an Italian immigrant she met in English language class. Some of her siblings stayed in Germany. Perished in the camps. Her youngest sister survived and came to America. But she was mentally damaged from that horror, attempted suicide at least once (had a scar around her neck) until she succeeded in drowning herself.

People talk about the horrors of fascism in the abstract. But for my family, it is very real. I think that we all need to speak about it.My generation, the grandchildren of the victims of the Nazis, is old now. I try to tell this story as often as I can.

I've talked about this in smaller contexts, but I haven't found any traction and time is getting short. When the Nazis passed the enabling laws for the book burning on April 8th, 1933 — exactly 90 years ago in 34 days — the first thing they burnt, the same day, were the archives of the largest trans and gay research institute in the world. When they say now that we didn't exist until after the war, the only reason they can get away with it is that they burned all the accumulated evidence.

Today's cover slide doesn't really need a t-shirt.

yes to be fair we actually have a lot of really great people designing and building a lot of really great bike infrastructure in the US, and we'll cover that in class. But we also have a way too much of this, and it gets people killed 👇
