also strategically russia needs secure access to the blacksea ports for year round trade in addition to the caspian. without it they'd be cut off. usa wants into the european market for oil & gas (evident from decades of prospecting in ukraine, including bidens + burisma et al), as does canada (while railroading indigenous nations to build the necessary pipelines). so ... down with the nordstream 2 (which bypasses ukraine into germany). some of the oil/gas is recently discovered, but the current international machinations in the region go back at least to ww2. a lot murkier than good guys vs bad guys.
