sometimes reminded of the 'evil empire' ethos of hiring people you can control instead of people who do good jobs. problem with this being that degrading quality to ensure continuation of control opens you up to the realization your empire is made out of popcorn and a genuine adversary is just gonna exploit the shit out of how stupid you've been the whole time
