@RobHadley It was founded by a cofounder of Twitter, but it doesn't appear to be owned by Twitter.
I had to look this up myself. I could have sworn Twitter owned it at some point, but apparently not.
@medium
is mastadon a safe space to say i called it in 2016 ??? the fact that interviewers never fact-check elon musk. and other assorted observations about tech billionaires and tech press' increasing inability to keep their pronouncements in check https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/nitashatiku/ground-control-to-silicon-valley
@mguhlin I find that the best way to change minds is to get to know someone first, make friends with them, and let conversations flow from there. It's also a lot more pleasant and natural for both you and them than simply arguing.
It's one of the reasons why I really like Discord and other chat apps, and why I always really disliked Twitter compared to Mastodon. With Discord and Mastodon you can have community. With Twitter you feel like you are just running into other people shouting into the void like you are, rather than getting to know anyone.
And frankly, it's amateur hour for people to play word games like saying "bird site" instead of #Twitter. If you want #Mastodon to be a true alternative for people fed up with Twitter and/or other social media sites, it's time to grow up just a little bit. If you don't like my attitude on this, please feel free to hit UNFOLLOW right now. Thanks.
@lauren I joined in 2019, years before the current rush in traffic and I didn't find it that hard, but that was a very different network than now and I am really into this stuff. I wish I could give advice about this.
I have heard a few complaints about servers being over moderated and kicking new users off, specifically with an online friend of mine. I am starting a personal Akkoma server at some point, and I plan to invite them to it (along with other friends and family) when I am done setting it up so that they don't have to go through it again.
There's also ancient Fediverse drama from before the current wave, but that would make this post very long, so it is best to omit it.

Depressing how many emails I'm getting from people to whom I recently recommended #Mastodon, that are variations of "I'm having trouble getting signed up."
These are relatively skilled computer users too (some *extremely* so) -- and longtime social media users.
This really *is* a problem.
@JamesGleick @marshallproj I am really surprised by a lot of these being included at all. Some of it just seems petty.
@JamesGleick @marshallproj wondering if my missing state (PA) isn't listed because they don't maintain a statewide list, of they failed to respond.
🤔
Is your book a “threat to the order and security of the institution”? The Marshall Project @marshallproj has created a database of #books banned in prisons.

@hehemrin He's not going to be able to buy Substack at this rate.
@drewharwell @caseynewton Some servers have quote toots. Just not mastodon.social.

3M says it will stop manufacturing #PFAS #foreverchemicals in 2025. But what about all the contamination already in the #environment?
Scientists are working on ways to eliminate it, but there isn’t a simple fix, as Michigan State University environmental scientists explain
@guitardis On the one hand, this particular pastor is fortunately a made up entity for the sake of a religious joke. At least, I think that pastor doesn't exist. I could be wrong.
As for the right wing obsession, it's what happens when church gossip is not only taken seriously by social media but reaches the ears of sympathetic or opportunistic politicians. Same with the satanic panic, D&D, Pokemon...
