I once read a story about how the Tuareg people of the Sahara improvised a vast sneakernet file sharing network using Bluetooth.

This was needed because there's not a whole lot of cellular networks over there. And some Tuareg are nomadic, so WiFi isn't an option either.

Some incredible music was shared this way. I think it's how Mdou Moctar for discovered.

@epistemophagy I agree with some of your points here, and I share your frustration to a considerable extent, but I am also not quite as worried about this scenario:

1. Twitter isn't viable anymore and it will be more apparent over time. Advertisers are not staying, the alternative money-raising mechanisms aren't working out, the regulators from the US and EU are circling, Musk continues to fire people without regard to what they do, and the number of tech issues at the site seems to be on the rise even as Musk guts staff and turns servers off. Journalists may not have (all) left yet, but it's only a matter of time before they have nothing to remain on there.

2. Most of the issues with onboarding are due to a lack of clarity in explanation and presentation (Join Mastodon is pretty narrow in the list of sites it features) more than actual difficulty, as well as certain prominent Twitter users being dismissive of attempts to leave. Some smaller, older instances can be very petty as well (don't get me started on the crap I have seen) which has affected one person I know who got banned from a smallee server; this has been an issue on Fedi since well before the current wave, and I suspect it is due to it being previously a refuge for people who didn't fit on mainstream social media for whatever reason. My suspicion is that this will change over time as different new parts of the Fediverse, Mastodon or otherwise, grow.

And I do suspect they will grow, based on several developments I have heard announced ...but more on that later. I think I need to get back to celebrating with my family. I will follow up on this later tonight.

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, or whatever you prefer: be safe and happy during this last week of the year.

@PCOWandre From my experience most of the community blocklist using servers are *tiny*. @matt @davidgerard @epistemophagy

@epistemophagy From what I have read of the Akkoma docs, migration should be easy and similar to Mastodon. @lethargilistic

A how-to on doing #Water #ResourceManagement as badly as possible.

"Kevin Rein, who oversees water rights, made a similar sentiment clear to the Colorado River District board last July. “There’s nothing telling me that I should encourage people to conserve,” Rein said. “It’s a public resource. It’s a property right. It’s part of our economy.” "

And that right there is how the colonizer always destroys the Earth.

A cautionary tale future generations.

As a human rights lawyer who has done extensive immigration work, let me make something absolutely clear.

Asylum is legal immigration.
There's no "port of entry" requirement.
There's no "visa" requirement.
There's no "first country" requirement.
You enter the United States, and you apply for asylum.

Because asylum is legal immigration. Period.

Period.

the sad reality of open source software development

In short: folks love the amazing decentralised encrypted comms utopia of Matrix. But organisations also love that they can use it without having to pay anyone to develop or maintain it. This is completely unsustainable, and Element is now literally unable to fund the entirety of the Matrix Foundation on behalf of everyone else - and has had to lay off some of the folks working on the core team as a result.

#Amazonia, you beauty!’ How the murders of Dom Phillips and Bruno Pereira renewed the fight for #Brazil’s forests - theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2 let's hope so - it's probably our last chance to keep it reasonably intact...

@mzedp I used to use Brave Browser, but with the upcoming update to Chrome;s API I've switched back to Firefox because the last thing I want is to be forced to deal with precisely that crap again.

So I joined in March 2019, but since there's been so many new people showing I think it's high time I posted a for them.

I am a recently-minted mathematics Ph.D. currently going for a masters' degree in cybersecurity at Rochester Institute of Technology. I am very interested in math, computers, computer security, literature (particularly fiction --- I like writing short stories) and languages. For hobbies I do coding, math research, walks at night, biking, camping and hunting with my father.

My political views at the moment (they have evolved over time, and will undoubtedly continue to evolve) are best described as a blend of social democracy and left-leaning liberalism, with one or two outlying positions thrown in as well. This aside, I don't mind hanging out with pretty much anyone, as long as they aren't hateful, bigoted, arguing in bad faith, or otherwise more unpleasant than pleasant to deal with. I tend to think, based on experience, that the best way to understand other perspectives and even get others to change minds on subjects is to be friendly, talk openly and honestly, and engage others in good faith whenever possible. (@tolortslubor, I hope this helps and is to your liking!)

To be fair, and as the article acknowledges, *is* harder to use than or . A lot of the difficulty is in deciding where to get started, the paralysis of choice, and that can leave a bad taste in your mouth which affects the whole experience. First impressions matter.

But it isn't *that* much harder, and there's real value in choice too. More to the point—again as the article says—there's value in, well, values. Nobody's getting rich off Mastodon. It exists because people think something like it would be neat to have, and they want to share that neatness with others who think the same. There are egos involved to be sure, but no one person's ego can bring it all crashing down.

As a practical matter, it is AFAICT the first and only open-source, distributed, not-for-profit social media platform that registers as a threat to the big players. That counts for a lot in my book.

Remember when the internet felt promising instead of overwhelming, depressing, and sometimes terrifying? Mastodon's bringing some of that back, at least for me.

Last night on Christmas Eve TX Gov Abbot sent asylum seekers to DC with no winter clothes or shelter. What "Christ like" behavior.

If only the Bible had a story of a mother fleeing tyranny w/her infant for refuge in a foreign land—maybe GOP would welcome refugees fleeing tyranny w/their kids for refuge in USA. Amazing how the same GOP extremists who demand the Constitution be based on the Bible, suddenly forget ever Biblical principle about serving humanity.

The dangerous hypocrisy of it all.

@freemo
So breakfast this morning was French toast, mimosas with sparkling wine, salmon and bagels, and a fruit salad.
I'm not 100% sure about the side dishes of the dinner, but I do know the centerpiece here is a *big* roast of beef.

@freemo It was, and still is! What I'm really looking forward to is the dinner tonight!

@freemo Here it's going well! More once we're done unwrapping presents

@sol @mastodonusercount It's Christmas and on a weekend. These probably are causing the slowness.
Plus the previous wave was caused by the link blocking.

A lesson of the past few years in tech is that it’s possible for an entire industry to gaslight you.

Whether it was the usefulness of crypto, the competence of certain billionaires or that unviable businesses were worth billions. There’s a lot that common sense said didn’t make sense that an entire industry of VCs, media and opportunists told us did.

It’s been a lesson in trusting your gut and not being afraid to swim against the current of popular opinion.
