We'll see. Of course I support this, but the simple fact is there aren't enough #scientists to form the kind of constituency that might get #Congress to show some spine. If non-scientists who appreciate the devastation these #cuts can cause step up ... maybe there's some hope.

Before he became known as a #serial #killer, John Wayne #Gacy was a popular clown who regularly performed at charity events. Suppose that because of his popularity, his town of Norwood Park had decided to name a street after him: call it Gacy Avenue.
Now suppose that after his murders came to light, the town wanted to change the name, but a bunch of residents who thought “shame about all those kids he killed, but you know, he was a really good clown” wanted to keep the name. So they declared that Gacy Ave. wasn’t actually named after noted killer clown John Wayne Gacy, but some other completely unrelated guy named William Gacy, who as it happened was also a really good clown but without that unfortunate predilection for slaughter.
How do you think that would go over with the families of John Wayne Gacy’s victims, exactly?
To be clear, my optimism didn't really last all that long, say from about 1995 when the #WWW really took off, to 1998 or so when the #dotcom bubble started to crack. By 1999 it was obvious things weren't working out so well: The #Matrix hit at exactly the right moment.
But oh, how I miss that brief period when it looked like we were going to get #StarTrek instead.
I remember when I was so optimistic about the techno-future. You know, "the #internet is the greatest advance in human #communication and #knowledge since the invention of #writing" and all that. I really believed we were headed for a golden age.
Maybe I was naive. But maybe not. Maybe we *could* have had that #future. And then the #techbros hijacked it and turned it to shit.
I am, once again, going to try to keep myself from posting about #politics. #Cats, #dinosaurs, my own #science when it's worth talking about, and fun stuff: that's the plan.
The political conversation is important, and I flatter myself that I have something useful to add from time to time. But it's a marathon, not a sprint. I need to pace myself.
And as a practical matter, I need to concentrate on the work that keeps me and those I love fed and housed, at least while it still exists. The #war on science already has #casualties among my friends. I'm trying really hard not to be one of them. #Medic's first rule.
So this is an accountability post as much as anything, a reminder to myself. It's easier to keep a promise you make to the world as a whole, than only inside your head.
All I know about #Trump is I could afford #eggs when #Biden was #President.
It's really kind of impressive how #MAGA finds the absolute worst possible people for every job. Quite an accomplishment, in its way.

This information is all out there, but it's good to have it in one place. The TL;DR is that the #Trump administration's goal is nothing less than the destruction of #American #science, and they may well get it. #NIH and #NSF are the most obvious and immediate targets—but #CDC, #FDA, #NASA, #NOAA, and even #DARPA are on the hitlist, along with numerous other funding agencies scattered throughout the government.

Authoritarians are often very fond of *engineering*: consider #Hitler's obsession with "#Wunderwaffen," or the #USSR's bloody-minded but largely successful approach to building a space program. But they fear and hate *science*, because inquiring into the fundamental nature of reality is anathema to ideology. Of course #engineering without #science runs dry fast, and you end up with everything from faulty machinery to mass starvation. This doesn't really bother the people in charge, most of the time. "Some of you will die, but that is a sacrifice I am willing to make."
Engineering is also where the profit comes from, which is why governments *have* to fund science to get the shiny toys. Very few private organizations are able to fund years-long blue-sky research, and those that can usually don't particularly want to. I'm lucky enough to work in a field where a fair amount of science *is* privately funded, but it's still all downstream from academic science—and that means #government #grants.
Take those away, and it's like killing the roots of a plant. The leaves may look healthy for a while, but sooner or later the whole thing withers. Since farming this particular plant is not only how I make my living, but also what keeps people I care about alive (including myself, as the years go by) I take the whole thing kind of personally. Hell if I know what to do about it, though.
Well. For the moment, there's still some life above ground. I'd better get back to that, and harvest what I can. Maybe we'll make it through the famine to come.

Many of my friends have worked at #KingSoopers over the decades. It used to be completely unionized, and a good place to work. #Kroger bought it out in the 1980s, and has steadily ground down the #unions ever since. I honestly don't know how much of a difference this #strike will make.
I do know the battle is worth fighting, and those who fight it are worth supporting. As convenient as King Soopers is around here, there are other places to shop. Do what you can, when you can, and maybe things will get better someday.

#Vaccination is quite possibly the most heavily studied kind of #healthcare in existence. We have more data about the #safety and #efficacy of #vaccines than *anything else* we do to keep people alive and healthy. The conclusions from that data are overwhelming and inescapable: vaccines work.
Antivaxers will never, ever accept any amount of evidence. Nothing will ever satisfy them. You will never change their minds. They have chosen the side of lethal #pathogens over the side of their fellow human beings, and they are fixed in their #treason.
Thanks to current politics, they now have the power to propagate their lunacy via the law. We can no longer, on a national level, protect ourselves from them by #publichealth means. So what can you do to stay alive?
First, cut them out of your life. They may be your parents or siblings or children, your spouses or lovers, your oldest and closest friends. Doesn't matter. The people you thought you knew and loved are dead—as dead as they want to make you. Cast out the walking corpses wearing their skin.
Second, stop wasting time. Don't try to reason with them. They will happily goad you into presenting a long, carefully reasoned argument, and then laugh at you, gleefully spraying infectious spittle across your face. The space between their ears is nothing but disease.
Third, do what you can locally. States and cities and businesses can, at least for now, deny services to the walking dead. Every school, every office, every store, *especially* every clinic and hospital, can and must make them pariahs.
And frankly, even if this kind of self-defense becomes illegal, it's probably still worth the risk. Consider the alternative.
In short, stop treating them like they're people. Maybe they used to be, and it's natural to remember that. But they're not now, and they never will be again.
Mourn them and move on. Do what you can to keep yourself safe, and those still worthy of your love. Survive.
