Go To Social: From what I've seen of it in the wild, it behaves unpredictably on the fediverse and is very buggy in federation.

It also throws out Go's potential performance advantages by just using it as another tool for single user instances.

It also looks very alpha.

A few observations:

Mastodon: Hard to install, very resource intensive, very opinionated (i.e. over asinine things like character limits).

Pleroma: Poor usability. More functional.

Misskey: Sort of okay. It has some interesting features and the usability looks alright? The way it handles visibility is different than other systems leading to unpredictable results.

I have to look deeper into this implementation.

Every time I hear of them, it has to do with, ironically, complaining about NSFW content on the fediverse (is it really that surprising that someone will use it for this?).

I also have potential concerns about language / cultural barriers here.

What kind of struck me about Pleroma is that in one interview, the lead developer was kind of proud of it's poorer usability (as it'll presumably keep the corporate riffraff away).

Various things I noticed while doing a round of research.

From what I can tell, Pleroma is likely a reference to Ancient Greek. There, it means fullness or completeness.

In more modern times, it is more used in reference to God.

Capita is an outsourcing company, paid millions of pounds to help the Home Office track the GPS location of non-British people 24/7 using ankle tags or portable devices.

This practice has been described as “psychological torture” by those subjected to it.

I used to post *a lot* more human rights content and not really that much anime content, lol.

I changed that a bit for a few reasons, one is that I want to spread a bit more positivity.

Of course, Discord cheated a fair bit by using a lower level language to circumvent Elixir's limitations.

Matrix will still be better than Discord though, because it actually supports end-to-end encryption, and you can install it on your own hardware.

Also, you don't have to rely on yet another unreliable tech giant.

From what I remember, Discord used Elixir for guilds (although, they use a lot of languages for a lot of things), so the more you know.

Who knows if they still do it though.

Unfortunately, practically everything wants to collect telemetry on you these days and you have to keep your wits about you.

Research is fairly important, otherwise I might jump in without fully understanding the problem space (leading to wasted efforts, although I suppose that no effort here is really that wasted).

The joke about it being hip is kind of a joke, but I'd also like to look into what can be done in this ecosystem, because I'm seeing quite a few gaps.

Consider it an experiment.

I think that developers sometimes undervalue the importance of UX and instead focus a fair bit on raw functionality.

I remember that a few years ago, that ecosystem (and related ones) were far more prominent than they appear to be now.

While that has largely stagnated, others have risen up. And frankly, it's probably the UX.

I think I upset someone by saying the UI on Pleroma isn't pretty, but it kind of isn't, and that kind of matters (as does usability).

Hehe, should I post more human rights content, more anime content, or... maybe... both...?

@trinsec Watch how quickly "free speech platforms" flee from sexual content after engaging in First Amendment bluster ;)

For years, they have tended to be worse than Twitter in that area, and Twitter is not exactly the best.
