"I am a firm believer in free speech except when I am not."
While I won't argue that I am a fan of Trump, Louis appears to be cherry-picking quotes to misrepresent Facebook's decision / position here.
@anicasts Something which is likely to come up is that different servers might federate with more or less servers.
For instance, I think your server (and these two servers probably more so, I've seen people complain about them aggressively over-blocking) federate with fewer servers than even the one I am on does.
Then again, some servers might have some sort of drama to them. So, it's possible that there are servers which aren't that visible.
@anicasts I wouldn't recommend these two servers to use. There was an "anime culture war" vibe to them.
Generally though, accounts seem to be diffused across a bunch of general purpose servers. One account following an account from another server might help there.
There are "art instances" but these are not really "instances for talking about anime". There are also a few which might have quite a bit of drama.
I think there is "harassment" (someone said something mean to me online), and then there is *harassment* and that is quite a bit different. Plus, this is a government official delving into the thorny area of speech.
From what I could see though, they received relatively few responses, even at the best / worst of times.
This was also an official who behaved *deliberately provocatively*, then they were upset about how people apparently responded to them.
While it's plausible that "harassment" is coming in in some other form, visible posts seemed fairly civil.
I remember when a wannabe internet censor complained about being "harassed" and there were like five or so replies to one of their posts which were critical.
@IrishStewPodcast @LouisIngenthron @maddler I don't disagree that that can be troublesome. I think the bigger problem is that it's complex and there is a temptation to think there are easy answers. Often, there aren't. There is also usually quite a bit which a company might already be doing to deal with it.
Quite a bit of this seems to involve public figures. If it's someone who is very big, a team could filter out abusive messages. Defamation laws have been used against a few very large users before. Also, public figures presumably use particular platforms, because that is where the discourse is. There are good reasons why over-control has tended to fail.
While someone appears to have removed false positives from their scan database involving "cartoons", it remains unclear whether there are still ones involving realistic 3D renders (which could still lead to someone being wrongly accused, these are not a new phenomena).
They also use very specific technical language rather than outright saying that there are no, say, family photos.

"UK government officials fear tailbacks and chaos at UK ports in three months’ time unless the #EU again delays plans to introduce a biometric travel registration scheme requiring facial and finger scanning."
"From 6 October all non-EU nationals will be required to enter biometric and fingerprint technology under a new European entry/exit system."
