Two of the comments under the article mention XMPP protocol for messaging. I've heard good reviews about it too, and it's much more lightweight for selfhosting than Matrix.
Will definitely try it later, currently I don't use any decentralized or selfhosted messenger.

Wow, I can imagine the frustration.
In my country many people think credit cards are for poor, and never get them. There are no credit scores, only credit history (actual detailed info about your loans and how you paid them).
You can have no credit history and it doesn't mean anything in terms of getting your first loan.
Just a thought that crossed my mind.
What if I imported a big part of a recent facebook leak into my Android adress book to poison data that WhatsApp has on me.
That's probably illegal in many countries, but it's using their own weapon against them.

@sptnkmmnt Debian Testing? You can install apt-listbugs to avoid updating when serious bugs are present. I use Debian Testing for about a year and it's stable enough for me.
