Given how long it’s gone without any bites, I’m guessing the answer is going to be “it’s complicated/impossible” or something, but it seems like it really should be possible.

There is a new upstream tzdata release (2020f), but it makes no changes to the data, and the only thing likely to be affected by updating the PyPI package is the version number, so don’t panic if we skip this one!

I ask because I’d like to post photos of my family on various platforms but I am not yet comfortable with the idea of posting my son’s face in public or semi-public settings.

I’d love to keep the essence of the photos without necessarily posting his face, though…

Does anyone know if there exists a program that I can run locally on a Linux computer that will take a photo and replace a specified face with another face with the same expression?

Seems like it should be possible with deepfakes / animoji type stuff.

It would be shocking if changing the time zone with less than a week’s notice did not result in a bunch of easily avoidable problems.

New release of the tzdata PyPI package today (2020e). The most pressing issue in this one is a change to the time zone in Volvograd reflecting a time zone change taking place on December 27th (<48 hours from now!).

Also make sure to update your system packages!

Does anyone have any suggestions for sources of news that actively attempt to be anti-sensational, for those who just want a general idea of what everyone is talking about?

I’ll note that I personally try to avoid “the news”, but enough leaks through my filters that I end up seeming somewhat well-informed about the discourse of the day.

I know other people who won’t absorb the “current events” zeitgeist peripherally who would benefit from some simple sites that gives you a broad overview of the stuff people are talking about.

This is one reason I haven’t been able to merge anything on python-dateutil in forever. Every time I go to do a bunch of merges, I just spend 6 hours fixing CI then run out of OSS time.

Man, maintaining stuff that only gets commits every once in a while is a study in frustration. Aggressive bitrot on all my CI systems every time.

And they are still adding new courses. Maybe I’m just out of the loop and 10 years of course materials have accumulated out there from hundreds of universities and is ready for me to consume it.

If anyone has a rosy view of the open course movement I’d be very happy to hear it.

I would love it if I could just download and seed a torrent of some CC-licensed course materials from any number of universities — especially for some niche courses rather than just the “giant lecture hall” 101 courses.

I think the ADA lawsuit against Berkeley probably really damaged that dream, but in general I see it as a very disappointing failure of open / libre culture ☹

About 10-12 years ago, I was super hopeful about the promise of open university courses. I taught myself economics and many other subjects by carving out some time each day to watch a 30 minute video, take notes and do some homework.

The catalogs from many universities were already quite large at the time and I figured that in time you’d be able to get something close to a full undegraduate degree’s worth of classes at home from watching videos.

I am very sad that MOOCs (synchronous, time-limited, graded courses behind walled gardens) sucked so much air out of the room.
