📢 My group is actively recruiting new PhD students interested in building interactive tools to study and improve urban accessibility. We're particularly interested in candidates who have background in data science, GIS, and/or computer vision. See: jonfroehlich.github.io for more!

Together, let's transform the future of urban access! 🏙👩‍🦯👩‍🦽👩‍🦼🛴🚴‍♂️

IMHO the most complete and remarkable site for #womeninscience #womeninSTEM. 1432 portraits !

An extraordinary source of information. Only in spanish but very easy to browse and understand with an online translator (such as DeepL translate)

Hi! 👋
It's time for an #introduction here on #neuroscience mastodon.
I'm Hannah Haberkern and I study flies to learn more about how animals navigate. I'm especially interested in visual orientation and the role of plasticity in #navigation. Currently I'm a postdoc at HHMI Janelia in Vivek Jayaraman's lab.

I'll take this new start as an opportunity to start sharing a bit more #pigeon and #quilting content. Here's me with a semi-recent quilt finish, a quilt that's in progress, and my Boab.

I have an important request.

Bad actors will soon figure out - if they haven't already - that setting up impersonations of important organizations now will allow them to set off an explosion of chaos and confusion at a time of their choosing.

So if you run an account for an organization, please set up link verification between your Mastodon account profile and your organization's website.

If not, please boost.

Instructions are here under "Link Verification":

Please apply - this is a great program!

RIP Fred Brooks, whose works profoundly influenced me, like so many others. "The programmer, like the poet, works only slightly removed from pure thought-stuff. He builds his castles in the air, from air, creating by exertion of the imagination." #FredBrooks #SoftwareEngineering #RSE

Sad news from UNC Chapel Hill Computer Science — Fred P. Brooks, the founder and long-time chair of the department (and a major influence on my professional outlook) passed away a few hours ago.

RS-FISH was just released as open access article in @naturemethods

RS-FISH is a user-friendly software for accurate spot detection that is applicable to smFISH experiments, spatial transcriptomics, and spatial genomics. The approach enables fast spot detection in even very large volumetric datasets.

PhD students: Want to work with Mary Gray, Nancy Baym, Tarleton Gillespie, and me at Microsoft Research on sociotechnical projects? We are hiring both interns and postdocs. For more info, see: socialmediacollective.org/

I am helping with research using for animal studies. Unity is powerful, and I have had no trouble getting a free educational license, but still, it is a license. Is anyone doing animal studies (3D ) with a license-free system like ()? I would be interested in hearing about the pros and cons. Note that some of our applications require multiple external displays (at least four, ideally six) running at high frame rates (at least 120 Hz, ideally 240 Hz) showing enough 3D geometry that we need LOD management.

Don't forget that Janelia's Computation & Theory area is looking for both [Senior] Group Leader candidates (janelia.org/our-research/our-l) and Theory Fellows (janelia.org/our-research/overv)! Are you working on interesting computational and theoretical approaches to address fundamental biological questions? Talk to us!

Please consider contributing to this Kiskstarter campaign to support a documentary on the great #BenBarres, renowned neuroscientist and trans man.

From the outset, the bioRxiv vision has been to decouple dissemination and peer review. It's a sign of how far things have come that there'll be an entire HHMI meeting on preprint review (Dec 1-2) - which you can stream janelia.org/you-janelia/confer
