In WW2, the movement of millions of American troops to Britain, known as the “friendly invasion,” brought to light stark differences concerning racial segregation. Many Britons struggled to understand or accept the institutionalized discrimination that Black soldiers faced in White America, leading to tensions between the two allied nations on the matter of civil rights.

On July 15, 1944, in Bristol England, the "Park Street Riot" occurred as 400 Black soldiers confronted 120 MPs over pub access. Observers later recounted that locals rooted for the Black troops. Like the Battle of Bamber Bridge a year earlier, this event underscored the racism Black troops faced as well as the disconnect between how they were treated overseas vs in their own country.

BREAKING: Fury in Mississippi at the suggestion it's as impoverished and poorly governed as Britain

I wish I could get enthusiastic about nuclear energy, because "Fissile, not Fossil" is a great slogan.

Wow... A German court refuses extradition to the UK, after asking about "chronic overcrowding, staff shortages, violence among inmates", only receiving a vague, last-minute email frok a police station in Manchester about "creating an extra 20,000 prison places", and then being ignored.

At this point I'm starting to realize that blue-checks are essentially the same people who fall for Prosperity Gospel: Send the grocery and mortgage money to the crazy rich guy who blows it on himself, and feel like one of the elect.

Massive everywhere: what are your favorite conventions for computers and devices around the home and office?

Of late I've been going with Hebridean islands for system names, Star Wars critters for IP cameras (because one of the first ones I installed reminded me vaguely of a Jawa), and characters from and the Holy Grail for other minor network-enabled microcontroller-based gizmos.

I've started instantly blocking accounts that continually post "news" that doesn't seem to be corroborated anywhere else and has no links or attribution. It's really distracting.

To the shock of absolutely zero people, I have lots of thoughts about King Arthur movies. Thanks to @UncannyMagazine for giving me a space to discuss!

This ship, the "Icon of the Seas" is generating a lot of controversy. Up to a point, i don't see the problem.

By all means, let everyone who wants to board it do so, and let it sail. The only part I object to is letting it ever come back.

Voting made easy:

Researching the issues and candidates can be time-consuming and baffling. instead, try this. Pick the most reliably wrong-headed person you know who likes to buttonhole you and tell you their theories about the world. Ask them how they intend to vote. Then do the opposite.

(Half-stolen or at best heavily paraphrased from Robert A. Heinlein)

Been trying here and there to watch the third series of on . It feels terribly padded: long conversations that don't reveal anything new, entire scenes and set pieces that backtrack rather than advance the plot. The first two series didn't have this problem. I might stop here in the middle of the third episode and see if the fourth series is any better.

It occurred to me that the Spın̈al Tap quote from Nigel Tufnel, "none more black" would be a good band name. So I googled it. First result is a band that had the same thought.

Trump to Judge Chutkan: I cannot respond to the court with a 1 page reply in two days. I need 14 days.

Trump to Fox News: I can end the Ukriane war in 24 hours.

You never know how much you mutter while driving until you review your dashcam footage for the first time.

If someone is a bloviator is that which causes them to bloviate a bloviant?

Offhand I can think of two situations in which someone tells you "go stand in front of that brick wall", and only one of them is to do comedy. Though both can lead to "dying'" in some sense.
