Russia, Ukraine, Twitter, Musk, Nick Cohen

While Twitter is suppressing Substack links, Nick Cohen writes a thorough explanation on why -- the popular over-hasty use of the word notwithstanding -- it's correct to say that Russia is fascist.

Why didn’t I know about this forthcoming film, Crows? The tagline is perfect: nature is watching us.

Next time someone suggests that Ukraine should trade Crimea for peace, and that "Crimea used to belong to Russia anyway".... point out that Texas is around the same percentage of the US in area as Crimea is of Ukraine, and it "used to belong to Mexico anyway", and ask them if they'd trade it for peace if the US were attacked.

Now that everyone in the world has a degree in immunology from the University of YouTube, perhaps they could get to work on finding a cure for the Dunning-Kruger Effect.

Nobody ever laughs after having a joke explained to them, but they keep asking anyway.

The Who hoped to die before they got old, but I say live long enough to think that a baseball cap with a folksy zinger embroidered on it will surely make everyone's day as much as it does yours.

My extra-special favorite refinement of the Dunning-Kruger Effect is when people take their ignorance of a thing's existence to be the authority to say it doesn't exist.

Piña Coladas aren't entirely terrible, but name one person who genuinely likes getting caught in the rain?

Currently: wet, wet, wet.

I feel it in my fingers
I feel it in my toes

I don't know how many other people are seeing it but I have the doge (i.e. dog meme) icon substituting for a twitter icon right now.

Elon has lost his fucking mind.

OTOH is there any more iconically perfect country rock song than Marshall Tucker Band's "Heard It In A Love Song"? Of course not, I hear you say. What kind of question even is that?

Is it just me or does listening to Blind Faith or Traffic feel like submerging in a stifling enclosed universe? Love me some Stevie Winwood but there's a strange claustrophobic private universe affect to that early stuff.

I really would like to switch from to on the desktop but there's still no way have two-finger scrolling without relentless gratuitous zoom-outs and -ins because it thinks your fingertips didn't trace perfectly parallel lines. MacOS NEVER gets confused about this kind of thing.

Imagining a retro-futurism of supercomputers in the style of Frank Lloyd Wright (incorporating art glass, etc). I.e., what if their aesthetic reflected #ai as a vast library of humanity?

Meanwhile, in Florida...

"The Disney movie “Ruby Bridges,” which tells the tale of a 6-year-old who integrated New Orleans schools in the 1960s, has been a staple of Pinellas County Black History Month lessons for years.
(...)
A North Shore Elementary parent who would not allow her child to watch the film when it was shown in early March later complained that it wasn’t appropriate for second graders. In a formal challenge dated March 6, Emily Conklin wrote that the use of racial slurs and scenes of white people threatening Ruby as she entered a school might result in students learning that white people hate Black people.

Pinellas school officials responded by banning the movie from use by all students at the St. Petersburg school until a review committee can assess it."

I have no words for this bullsh*t. Hiding "uncomfortable" history from children is how we end up with ignorant adults.

@pieist Yes true. It was publicity for the overall effort. If we can make obsolete even a substantial portion of the land we're misusing to raise beef, and the slaughterhouses, why that'll be a fine thing indeed.
