I think this passage says it all:

It became a haven for the LGBTQ+ community that wanted the freedom to choose for themselves what instances make the cut or not."

Do you want to be treated as an *adult* - free to explore the world but held responsible for what you do and say, or as an *infant* that needs protection because they don't know yet how to navigate this world and cannot be held responsible for what they do and say?
