@freemo
I joined qoto earlier this year. Qoto was on the list of recommended instances.
I haven't seen one term being used: virtue signaling. I think it's possible that once a name has become unpalatable in a group--especially with the aire of "you're with us or against us"--it's hard to pull out of that. Personally, I don't see what the big deal is; it seems like a misunderstanding around the term "free speech", which for some includes hate speech, causing others to think qoto supports that.

@freemo I have some empathy for the situation Eugen finds himself in, but caving to Nazis is never a good idea (not to mention, never the ethical choice).

@BobKerns @freemo
In theory whether you're literally in his good books shouldn't matter in a fully decentralised federated architecture. Too much emphasis on smacks of centralisation. Break free and set up the best science server.

@arinbasu

Its not all on him, a lot of blame lies in many of the leaders of the community who run large admins who are acting irresponsibly.

@BobKerns

@arinbasu @freemo The reason this matters is that the joinmastodon list is not itself federated, but it is what people encounter when they wish to join.

I would not have found it if I had joined a few days later.

And I wouldn’t have been happy with any of the choices I was presented with. That’s not good for the , and it’s not good for people fleeing Twitter. Often is exactly the right place for them.

@arinbasu @freemo (I have plugged qoto on Twitter, and I plan to do so again soon).

@BobKerns @freemo

True. I joined qoto several years ago, when none of these blocks happened. You're spot on, that one cannot find these instances otherwise but here is the thing: it doesn't have to be this way that joinmastodon does not need to play the gatekeeper.

@arinbasu @freemo My promoting on Twitter is one way to bypass the gatekeeping, and I encourage others to do so as well.

An alternate curated list would also be possible, but a lot of work, and you’d have to find a way to get it front of people who just know “mastodon” and type it into their search bar.

@freemo

I think this passage says it all:

"The reason QOTO became a focal point at this time is because *we were one of the only servers that allowed our users to choose what content they wanted to block*, and made our blocklist optional, but at the same time *had a zero tolerance stance for hate speech and prejudice*. It became a haven for the LGBTQ+ community that wanted the freedom to choose for themselves what instances make the cut or not."

Do you want to be treated as an *adult* - free to explore the world but held responsible for what you do and say, or as an *infant* that needs protection because they don't know yet how to navigate this world and cannot be held responsible for what they do and say?

@freemo hm 🤔 - yes, cancelculture reaching the fediverse...

Luckily I'm comoletely neutral - so I'm not in the sport of hunting / witchhuntijg / canceling anyone...

When extreme left finds extreme right, or the other way arround - it's logical that the minority of extremists are going to find eachother lol...

Red VS Blue... if you mix those, you grt purple... that's why in the netherlands we have (had) a "Paars Cabinet" (a Purple Government) - Not left, not right but through the middle was the slogan 🤣🤘

So yes, if you get tribalism , just like in reallife - diversity, minority groups, different ethnicities, - all those things USUALLY have an attitude of "Live & Let Live"...

It is normal that when mainculture starts crusading by redefining the norms and ideas about free-speech (dialing it down quite a bit - with indeed probably the idea in mind "to protect minorities, prevent or counter discrimination, racism, hate crimes, seperatism etc.)

But at the same time "the righteous ones" - the crusaders are of course the ones that initially start attacking the status-quo... Which indeed starts with the very honest question "is this the world / society we want to be (in / part of / identify with / agreeing with)...

So by doing that, you are creating "identifiers" - different groups of people with different ideas of what is right and what is wrong... Morals & Values.

Mocking & blacksheeping others based on selfclaimed superior morality stated by minorities has a binding effect: it promotes herd & tribal behaviours - it's typically what minorities understandably do: Find a community where they find sameness, safety, likeminded and connected similarness - a tribal identity... Again, all very natural social behaviour lol..

Not all tribes go to war tho... Not every tribe is a tribe of warriors... Wether it's warriors for justice (greenpeace) lol which back in the days much milder then it is now 🤣 - Everything seems like it was much milder then it is now...

I mean - I like nature... I woukd support greenpece, WWF and the common pro wildlife & nature preserves.... But that's something completely different then actively joining extinction rebellion...

So that's where the social healthy tribalism that we all have - lol even as a non-radicalist, non-extremist but also non-neutralist (because I really think societies need to be aware there is cultural diversity and different viewpoints and ideas)..

Those that cannot handle the fact that there is a variety of ideas in the world, they can just stay in their little self-maintaining bubble... Everyone knows that Turkish communities for example are very much private and focussed towards their own community within society...

Everyone sees that, but it's also ok - because they are not hurting anyone, they do their thing, contribute, give the general greeting - but still are a very exclusive group towards outsiders...

Lol and of course there too you have the Turkish Mafia, the PKK or the GreyWolves etc - that DO get the news.

It's more about political trends and currents throughout societies and the influence of dominant culture... Globalist or anti-globalist, mainstream or niche - nobody can escape the influence of political agendas and active "cultural & social enterpreneuring" - meaning oligarchs like the Soros foundation, like the Bill & Melinda Gates foundation and many other unseen players & parties are spending their billions on activy shaping and tinkering societies...

And again, I belief it's their right to do so - instead of capitalist, they take a type if humanist or socialist approach - I don't know how to call it... But they don't invest in material things, they invest in visions and ideas, philosophies and ideas - like the people at Davos do as well lol...

And those ideas, and ideals, when they meet a very big bag of money and a couple of people that can organise, and a couple of political parties that are directly linked to these organisations haha - well yes - obviously that is going to impact and resculp - or atleast affect societies, people definately will notice let's say that...

Cultural innovation, renovation, reshaping... It's a battle of ideas & philosophies, forcing us to be confronted not with "who we are" - but "how & who we want to be"... That takes a certain maturity and love for philosophy - and the capability to just zoom out and detach.

These identities based on groups / tribes / political colour / sexual preference or moral superiority - well that's fine, but the Self should not be mistakingly be identified as that... Because that is where "being part of a group" turns extemist.

If you identify as the group itself, you become like the hooligan - which is fine to by me, just be aware of it... The hooligan says: If you touch my Club, you touch Me... and if you Touch me, I Touch you...

Things like Black Lives Matter & Extinction Rebellion and others are very good at that - Knights of Honour on their Moral High Horse...

They act like crusaders, and probably are... Backed by their Order of Templars lol... I won't get to deep on that...

But as you see: THIS - This article you shared and the entire evolution & movement and all that going on... Is not stand-alone, it's not a coïncidence, it has nothing to do with chance & everything with probability...

It is what it is: It is a movement, and it is in motion... Whatever people think of it is up to the people, every person is different ;) - lol even those in a group that "think" they "are" the grou, are just individuals like you and I haha...

Goodmorning,

and thanks for sharing - lol although I think there might be an agenda behind that lol... which is fine - people should not fear ideas... They can just look at it and go:"yea yea, that's fine - but not for me, thank you!" - and move on... Unless they choose otherwise of course, that depends on the person... Personal Freedom ;)

Good day 👍
