While a fork won't be supported financially by most current MacOS/Windows users, there are many possible improvements for those who care about privacy, including the removal of OpenAI integration.

But since Logseq is still under heavy development a patched version would make more sense than a hard fork.

See for example Bromite browser that is based on Chromium for Android but with many privacy-oriented changes.

About Dendron: being tied to VS Code made it too much developer-oriented and couldn't attract the average PKM users.

I don't know much about Athens but I think that Logseq being a good and probably better alternative was a driving factor.

@dugite_code

is closed source, only the team can implement an online version properly

@stefan

Mainly Zettlr since it has wikilinks and tags and Nextcloud Notes. Syncthing to sync files.

An alternative to Logseq would be Org-roam but I would like to keep using Markdown syntax:
orgroam.com

There is also SiYuan but I fear thar it will be like Logseq: github.com/siyuan-note/siyuan

Also AnyType is worth a mention but it is not FOSS atm and it doesn't use Markdown:
anytype.io

“Culturally, there’s this issue in machine learning where working on data is seen as silly work and working on models is seen as real work.”-- @mmitchell_ai

Exactly! I have been emphasizing this point in several talks, referring to the broken incentive system in the #ML world!

FYI IzzyOnDroid repo just takes APKs from the original devs (generally from their GitHub repo) and serves them in the form of a F-droid repo.

An alternative is using a new app called Obtanium that takes the APKs directly from GitHub repos so that you don't need to depend on IzzyOnDroid to add them:

github.com/ImranR98/Obtainium

P.S. Logseq Sync works decently well now but I can't use it for sensitive notes until they make everything FOSS and I can download reproducible builds.

#PhysicsFactlet
At optical frequencies, most media respond to an electromagnetic wave proportionally to the electric (magnetic) field applied, and are thus said to be "linear".
In such media a monochromatic wave can be slowed down, resulting in refraction, but its frequency is unchanged.
But for all real media, the reaction to an electromagnetic field is only approximately linear, and for high fields it is possible to see deviation from linearity.
One consequence of a nonlinear response, is that the medium can generate frequencies that were not present in the pump wave, the simplest case being the "second harmonic generation" where a wave of twice the frequency of the pump is produced.
But, due to the time reversal symmetry of Maxwell equations, if we can generate a wave at twice the frequency, we can also take that and convert it back to the original frequency.
So, in order to maximise the amount of second harmonic generated, one needs to make sure that the phase of the pump and the second harmonic do not drift while the waves are propagating through the crystal. If these "phase matching conditions" are not satisfied, the energy will flow back from the second harmonic to the pump.

My account indicated as "suspended" probably means I am silenced or blocked or some other kind of measure but it is intentionally not clear as a consequence of control mania by Mastodon CEO

Anyway Qoto is a fork of Mastodon that diverged in the development and it uses standard ActivityPub like everyone else in the Fediverse.

I consider mastodon.social, mastodon.art and some others like walled gardens inside the Fediverse and they are fooling people into believing that only what they approve exists.

@nhan

Another major problem is that depending on the instance you are on you will see different posts. For example try to open posts by people from different instances in the browser from their instances. Often you will see more comments. This annoys people with a lot of followers because they get comments from different people asking the same thing because they can't see each others.

It's a problem of ActivityPub that I highlighted for the first time years ago but people keep saying how cool and lightweight AP is etc. Matrix.org is designed to not have these problems but it's way more complex and people can't understand that we usually wrap complexity behind libraries and framework, so they just don't see Matrix as an alternative at all.

@nhan@pkm.social

I am not blocked, I can see your posts as @nhan@mastodon.social

qoto instance or my account are silenced by mastodon.social

@nhan

mastodon.social is managed by the Mastodon CEO, read here how he fell into the stupid trap of some "Nazi" trolls:

I guess the discriminant you are looking for is a judge's warrant as a requirement but the judiciary can be corrupt and the warrant granted without accountability of the judge.

Not all VPNs are created equal.
This reminds me of that time when Italian police came to my home asking me to plant a backdoor in @noscript to help them in an operation, and I kindly explained that it being FOSS and under costant scrutiny of @mozilla add-ons editors and @torproject developers, such a thing would have been simply inconceivable.
They just thanked me for my time and went away.

I've only recommended one VPN service, ever (and no, I don't have any financial relationship to them): Mullvad. They have always seemed to be one of the few entities that practices the mantra, "You don't have to protect what you don't collect."

This quite a press release:

"Mullvad VPN was subject to a search warrant. Customer data not compromised
20 April 2023 NEWS

On April 18 at least six police officers from the National Operations Department (NOA) of the Swedish Police visited the Mullvad VPN office in Gothenburg with a search warrant.
They intended to seize computers with customer data.

In line with our policies such customer data did not exist. We argued they had no reason to expect to find what they were looking for and any seizures would therefore be illegal under Swedish law. After demonstrating that this is indeed how our service works and them consulting the prosecutor they left without taking anything and without any customer information.

If they had taken something that would not have given them access to any customer information.

Mullvad has been operating our VPN service for over 14 years. This is the first time our offices have been visited with a search warrant."

@stefan

disappointed me and I advice everyone that cares about FLOSS, Markdown and in general digital sovereignty to read this and think twice before saving too many notes in Logseq:

qoto.org/@post/110203051859101

P.S. even the new website is misleading, Logseq doesn't look like that nor it is possible to view items like those without complex hacks and plugins.

It is easy to give someone the illusion you just explained them something difficult, without actually providing them with anything that will help them really understand it. Actually, in doing so, one will usually create very bad misconceptions.

This is obviously bad, and nobody should do it, but since you will heralded as a great communicator if you do, the incentives are strong.

TL;DR: There isn't any topic too hard for you to understand, but you need to put in the hard work. There are no shortcuts.
