Follow

Someone pointed out that the best way to search Mastodon is to use hashtags. Is there a list of that people have used, so that I can pick the right ones and not uninteresting create duplicates? Is there a suggested syntax? I see some hashtags have an underscore between words like ; is that frowned upon?

Is there a way to "follow a hashtag" so that toots with that hashtag show up in my feed?

Ugh, I tried to write "unintentionally", but it somehow ended up as "uninteresting". And I don't know how to fix it, since there is no Edit button.

@quest Yes. You can follow hashtags and have the relevant toots show up in your home or any other list that you have. Go to
qoto.org/settings/follow_tags
It was difficult for me to find it, people had to help me.

@Waldemar Thanks, it would have taken me a while to find it! By the way, what is a "list" as mentioned on that page?

@quest I see it as a specialized timeline. You can follow people, hashtags or even keywords and they will show up when you open that list. Like another Home feed but focused on a specific topic.

@quest btw I'm no expert, I'm still experimenting here!

@Waldemar @quest That is correct. Consider a list an extension of your home timeline. If you follow a few people who might be very spammy and drown out everyone else you follow, you can decide to make a 'spam list' for them. Or you can decide to have lists by category like 'gaming' 'gardening' and put in the followers in the most approrpiate list. That way you can keep your home timeline fairly tidy.

@quest There is a delete & redraft option, but it'll mean you lose all comments and faves on it.

But this server is going to be updated soon, then the edit feature will be added. :)

@quest There's no standard convention on which hashtags to use. When you type in a toot and have to ponder which hashtag spelling to use, you could in the meantime search for those hashtags and see which one(s) are the most common to join in with the crowd. 'Tis what I do too. Most common style I have seen are PascalCaseHashtags. (And also recommended so blind people with screen readers would be able to interpret this correctly instead of one very long word that becomes undecipherable).
