January 9: Crazy automaton
Build a big fullerene (the dual of an order-6 icosahedral geodesic sphere, I think). Paint its pentagons black and its other faces white (like a soccer ball). Use a simple rule to evolve face colours: re-colour a face black if the subset of the face and its neighbours that are currently black has odd size, white otherwise. The result is a symmetrically evolving series of soccer ball patterns (that appears to repeat after 31 generations). #genuary 9: crazy automaton. This is kind of reaction diffusiony, where a pixel lives or dies based on its neighbours in the previous frame, but operating on a warped domain. Implemented as a p5.strands shader! https://openprocessing.org/sketch/2843293 #p5v2 #p5

I can confirm, in Spain impact factor is very much evaluated when assigning grants / PhDs / evaluating your scientific production.
OpenAlex, while very cool is still far from complete.
I'd like to see Scholia detach a bit from wikidata so that it could be used for that purpose more extensively.
Nothing wrong with OpenAlex, but I found plenty of errors in their database and they don't provide a way to notify the error.
The largest fundamental science agency in Europe will save €1.4 million annually by breaking free from Clavariate Analytics' commercial databases of references and citations.
Starting January 1st 2026, the CNRS will stop subscribing from the Web of Science, along with the Core Collection and Journal Citation Reports.
"We have worked for free to lock ourselves collectively into a paid system", one head of the CNRS explains - but no more! 🎉

Bonus: Dubois' data and visualizations from the early 20th century are available for free on #Github so that anyone can reproduce the infographics, run their own analyses, etc.:

January 8: A City. Create a generative metropolis.
This took way too long, but the result is pleasing. Procedurally generated grid of Barcelona-style superblocks, rendered in parallel projection in a pixel art style. (If I had more time, I'd add windows to the facades). Source code at https://editor.p5js.org/isohedral/full/CYwfFZXNA. #genuary #genuary2026
[Edit: These are just blocks, not superblocks. h/t @11011110]

Don't take what I say as an insult, I have no bad intentions and I'm open to talk about it.
Don't star my toots, I find that often useless: if you liked it send a reply.
Consider boosting the toots, it's the only real way in which stuff is propagated through mastodon.
