@Yaku

3191. Superstition

title text: It's important to teach yourself to feel responsible for random events, because with great responsibility comes great power. That's what my wise Uncle Ben told me right before he died; he might still be alive today if only I'd said rabbit rabbit that year!

Rewriting an old personal project I had in python which I never finished in Julia.
The Julia is pretty nice: simple syntax but allows function overload, which I like.

Let's see if I finish it this time.

@ronanmcd @beep
I like docker/containers.
Sometimes I need to make web applications serving research models.
Such models are written by researchers, and rely on that specific version of R and libraries that has been deprecated 10 years ago, as well as some python library that is not published anymore and some glue to make it work with some Fortran library that needs some very specific hooks to work. Of course you can not change anything, because it has to be the same model to make results reproducible.

Then it has to be installed by someone else on a server I have no access to. Go explain to them how to install that kind of stuff into their system, while most of the people doing this are also researchers trying to figure out what Apache is...

With the container I can just tell them, look run this command and then have a reverse proxy pointing at the selected port.

Most of them don't even bother with the reverse proxy and just serve the docker on port 80 and that's it, fuck SSL too complicated.

I found many errors in the openalex database.
Like authors with articles published in 2025 as well as 1920...

But I have found no way to signal the problem to them and get it fixed.

I do not consider it a reputable source of data to be used for h-index calculations.

@hart
Searching this image on Google it only shows up in Facebook, X and Reddit. No newspaper references this image.
Where did they get it from?
Sounds like this could be fake to me. There are articles saying that Maduro and his wife beat their heads during capture, but images of them arriving in the US don't look this bad at all.

@Yaku
Cosa?

Unfortunately they were able to kill sci-hub. That was a huge loss. Thank you Elbakyan for your great service to humanity.

oh, right, if i ever post links that lead to websites like anna's archive, libgen, sci-hub or zlib, do not enter them

while completely legal for personal use in my country (including sharing the downloaded files with friends or classmates), these sites are very dangerous, offering access to very expensive research papers to everyone without any fees. as a result, they're facilitating the unrestricted flow of knowledge and making an effort to bridge the educational gap between the wealthy and the poor. BEWARE

First carving of 2026

[ID 1 to 4 : Four pictures of a woodcarved plump red robin seen from different points of view. It sits on a rectangular base with rounded angles. The bird is very round. It is painted with burnt orange for the chest and a mix of brown and grey for the upper body.]

@sio

Grazie a @akaCisco e @SmilaBlomma
