re: carbon pol

Now, I will say: there's reasons why I think individual action isn't sufficient (but it's absolutely necessary!).

But, my point is, that's not because of something silly like 100 companies being the vast majority of the problem and just stopping those emitters being enough to solve the problem... because they're not the majority of emissions, their billions of customers are.

When I do ctrl-c after deciding not to run a shell command, I’m surprised it’s not a general practice for shells to strike through the never-executed command, especially given such stylistic adjustments were possibly even back in the day of teletypes

Happy 109 anniversary to this little nugget of an article. We've known what the problem is for over a century.

The reason I’m anti-big-corporate isn’t because I’m against people working for some collective goal, but because there are selfish people in this world and they are attracted to big-corporations like moths to a flame

@Pat I’ll agree that it’s a debated point, much like the Oxford comma, and The Guardian comes down on the lowercase side, but it just feels wrong to me en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capitali

Internet is a pronoun and should be capitalised, the header image is from nearly 2 decades ago, and the byline needs an Oxford comma — get proper editor, The Guardian!

@phel @wolfie This is correct. Podcasting isn't about what's in the content of the audio, it's about the way in which it's distributed. It's about the particular combination of downloadable audio files and openly-syndicated RSS feeds.

It's like how there are a zillion ways to send text-based content around the Internet, but only one method using a certain category of software configured to automatically interoperate among users' devices in a particular manner can properly be called "email."

A "podcast" behind a paywall is not a podcast.

A "podcast" that only one app can receive is not a podcast.

A "podcast" without a public feed that can be freely pulled into any podcast client or RSS reader is not a damn podcast, don't let people get away with calling it that.

Sometimes I think we really need a codified constitution in the U.K., especially when the government just need a majority to do away with stuff like the Fixed-term Parliaments Act

This whole debate around copilot has actually restored some faith in the industry — am seeing some really nuanced views around copyright, reducing the friction on producing bad code, and the continued centralisation of power to big tech

@freemo maybe someone needs to produce a USB teletype that can interface with modern machines; then we get have all our fun whilst having digital documents at the end of it

If I had a reason to write documents in my spare time, I could very easily see myself getting into antique typewriters

food

My daughter read about making butter by shaking cream and was very excited about the idea, so we tried it this morning.

I've never done it before, it's fun! There's a really weird moment where you have a jar of whipped cream and it seems like no matter how hard you shake nothing is happening, the whipped cream is just stuck to the sides of the jar and not moving...

then suddenly it separates all at once into a solid chunk of butter and a liquid puddle of buttermilk, it’s like magic!

I get there’s a whole campaign to make social media less addictive for them, by what oh why can’t I add a video intended for children to a playlist. I just cannot fathom the logic behind that one
