Why should you care about data brokers?

This story—about a Substack publication outing a priest with location data from Grindr—shows how easy it is for anyone to take advantage of data brokers’ stores to cause real harm. washingtonpost.com/religion/20

"Anonymized" location data, isn't. Catholic priest resigns after legally-obtained Grindr app data from a broker correlated location data with his and relatives' homes, his place of work, and gay bars. #privacy arstechnica.com/tech-policy/20

I dislike when companies capitalize on incidents, so I usually publish my thoughts months later to avoid even the appearance. But folks asked us how @purism products fare against a Pegasus-like attack so I wrote about our overall spyware defense. puri.sm/posts/defending-agains

@0 Probably the best advice you can give people is to absolutely stay away from cell phones (especially smartphones) and any closed software.

So I've been thinking about giving some moderately sound #infosec advice to those who might be specially at risk: #journalists, #activists, #lawyers and so on.

And the thing is, I can't.

I honestly don't see how someone who might be of interest, now or in the future, can secure his communications in a minimally effective manner against a rapidly increasing range of opponents with access to commoditised offensive tools.

So if you can't run and hide you're going to have to stay and fight.

one of the most common questions about the LBRY vs SEC case is: why LBRY? why go after a small company trying so hard to do the right thing?

Surgeon general just called for an expansion of AI censorship, including real-time streams.

Strengthen the monitoring of misinformation. Platforms should increase staffing of multilingual content moderation teams and improve the effectiveness of machine learning algorithms in languages other than English since non- English-language misinformation continues to proliferate. Platforms should also address misinformation in live streams, which are more difficult to moderate due to their temporary nature and use of audio and video.

For years I've been giving the TL;DR on this.

#E2E encryption such as offered by #XMPP's #OMEMO, #Signal, #Whatsapp, etc, provides no protection at all to someone who doesn't practice proper #infosec (and more generally, #opsec) hygiene.

If there's the remotest of chances that something you say might land someone in trouble, don't write it or say it anywhere near an electronic device.
